Nick Saban tells hilarious story about ‘curse jar’ by Caleb Downs & Alabama

College GameDay was broadcast live from Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, meaning star safety Caleb Downs of Ohio State was one of the players featured on the show.

GameDay aired an article about Downs, his childhood and his decision to leave Alabama for the Buckeyes following the retirement of coach Nick Saban after last season. Afterwards, Saban first praised Downs — who was named first-team All-SEC and national freshman of the year in 2023 — and then told a hilarious story about their relationship.

“This guy is one of the most complete people I’ve ever had the pleasure of coaching,” Saban said. “He is a great person, a great student and a phenomenal football player, with a great competitive spirit and competitive IQ. How he reacts on the pitch, he acts instinctively. I mean, it’s in the highest tier of any player of all time.

“But the one thing I have to tell you about Caleb is that I just don’t know if I can trust him. Last year we had a rule because I didn’t want to swear during the meetings. And I tried… to lead by example. So every time I cussed in the meeting – and I was always in the DB meeting, I had to pay five dollars.

“Well, Caleb was the guy holding the money. Well, there’s about $500 in it (by the end of the season). I don’t know what happened to the money.”

Host Rece Davis then intervened, saying ESPN Downs’ Jen Lada asked about the money, reporting that “Caleb Downs says he and Terrion Arnold spent that money.” It’s all gone.”

GameDay co-host Pat McAfee then said, “I always knew you paid your players.”

During the video, Downs revealed that he only left Alabama because Saban retired. “That was the coach I came to play for,” he said.
