The Detroit Red Wings’ point streak ends with a 2-1 loss to the Boston Bruins

The Detroit Red Wings couldn’t mount another comeback, even with two more skaters.

Saturday’s outing against the Boston Bruins was quite a grind, with the score tied at one apiece entering the third period at Little Caesars Arena. The Bruins prevailed 2-1, ending the Wings’ two-game point streak.

“We played hard, we competed,” captain Dylan Larkin said. “We just came up short. There’s a lot of learning in this game and I thought we could match their competition. They get the first one; we respond, and then it’s a tight game.”

Lucas Raymond scored for the second straight game, and goaltender Cam Talbot turned in a solid performance in net as the Wings faced the team directly above them in the aggregate standings in the Eastern Conference.

Brad Marchand took a pass from Andrew Peeke just outside the Detroit goal line, turned to the net, hesitated for a second to read Simon Edvinsson’s attempt to block the shooting lane – and fired a shot that put the Bruins ahead set at 8:30 am. play in regulation. The goal came seconds after a controversial icing on the cake, where it appeared as if Vladimir Tarasenko had gotten ahead of the Bruins defenseman; The fans weren’t happy with the call, but the Bruins worked toward a game-winning goal anyway, leading 12-3 in shots just around that point in the third period.

“We iced the puck and they get a faceoff goal, which is a focus for us to not give up those goals,” Larkin said. “We did that and that’s the difference. You have to create good rebounds for yourself and control the net, and I thought we did that enough to get rewarded, but it just didn’t come tonight.”

Shots favored the Bruins, 29-18, when the Wings made a fourth power play, and with Talbot pulled, a 6-on-4 lead, with 1:22 to play. Their best chance: Moritz Seider’s late shot went over the crossbar.

Coach Derek Lalonde pointed to poor puck management in the third period as a problem. “We just couldn’t get it out of our zone,” he said. “It didn’t hurt us that much until it did. I know it sounds crazy, but the puck is on our stick in the slot, we turn it over at the point and a few seconds later it’s in the back of our net. ”

Bruins convert, kill

It looked like the Wings were starting to get better at their penalty kill, but with eight seconds left after a tripping call on Marco Kasper coughed up a goal for Justin Brazeau. Tyler Johnson – who put up points against the Wings as a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning – fired a shot from the right circle onto the net that Brazeau deflected at 8:33 for a 1-0 lead. Shortly thereafter, Johnson took a game-delay penalty that gave the Wings a power play, but Jeremy Swayman turned away a wrist shot from Patrick Kane, a tip attempt from Alex DeBrincat and Andrew Copp’s backhand attempt to keep the Wings. remotely.

Minute man

After scoring in the final minute on Thursday night, Raymond scored in the final minute of the first period to give the Wings a lift going into the break. Give Tarasenko credit for a perfect backhand pass from the right circle straight past Bruins forward Elias Lindholm and straight into the closing zone, where Raymond scored a little one-timer to score his fourth goal of the season and third in five games. Dylan Larkin also picked up an assist for the 300th helper of his career.

Momentum in the second period

The Wings could have done better, building on the momentum earned with Raymond’s goal, but it was the Bruins who made more jumps in the second period. The Wings gave Raymond a penalty, a nice outing for the penalty killers considering how bad things have been lately (as their penalty kill is the worst in the NHL). But the power play also had a chance to show something, and the best chance belonged to Pavel Zacha, who had a small chance on an odd rush after the Bruins were able to bypass Larkin, leaving Moritz Seider as the lone Wing.
