In the final of the girls’ volleyball rankings, Bourne takes the next step

At the beginning of the year I said that the Cape and Islands have great teams at the top, but also great depth.

That turned out to be true.

In these final rankings, I will report on both the elite tournament teams that did well in the postseason and the teams that were solid.

All of these teams were fun to beat this year. This remains a top region for girls volleyball and that has never changed.

This final ranking will favor the teams that did well when the tournament season arrived.

The future of Cape and Island girls volleyball is strong. Many of these teams had impactful young players, and many of the same teams will be great again.

Let’s take one last look at the top teams.

1. Bourne (19-5)

No doubt about this one. The Canalmen won the Division 5 title game 3-0 over Whitinsville Christian. Bourne was great all season, playing a tough schedule and rolling through tournament play in impressive fashion. This has been a dream season for the entire program.

2. Barn stable (18-5)

Many years from now, Barnstable’s season would be good enough for first place. For most of the season, the Red Hawks were the top team in the Cape and Islands, and any Tom Turco-coached team will be strong. This team made it to the Division 1 Round of 8 where it lost to a very good Brookline team. Still a good season for the Red Hawks.

3. Dennis Yarmouth (13-9)

DY is another team that had a very good season from start to finish, even if it suffered some losses in the middle of the season. The Dolphins were very competitive, winning a Division 3 Round of 32 game in a sweep against Archbishop Williams. The season ended in a round of 16 loss to Holliston. Coach Dru Sisson has this program in a good place.

4. Sandwich (12-10)

Another team that achieved some tournament success. The Blue Knights defeated Nantucket in the Division 4 Round of 32. Those fun times came to an end in the Round of 16 with a straight-sets loss to Case. This was a team that, at its best, kept mistakes to a minimum and played mostly clean volleyball.

5. Mashpee (11-10)

This is a team that didn’t win a tournament game, but still had a quality season. The five-set win over Sturgis West was one of the season-ending highlights. The Falcons were competitive throughout, losing in five sets to Greater Lawrence in the Division 4 Round of 32. Another program on solid foundations.

6. Sturgis West (13-4)

The Navigators did not win a tournament, but they did have a great season. Brodie Gerlach was one of the top players on the Cape and Islands, and her batting was some of the most impressive you will ever see. This team lost in the Division 4 Round of 32 to Hamilton-Wenham in four sets.

7. Cape Tech (17-4)

Although this team lost its only tournament match – a Division 5 Round of 32 game against Innovation Academy Charter – the Crusaders are a program on the rise. This team played good team defense and it was difficult to find space on the floor for hits against the Crusaders. Quality players are coming back, and this team is coming back.

8. Falmouth (11-9)

This felt like a team that was gaining some steam towards the end of the season. Although the Clippers lost to Norton in the Division 3 Round of 32, Falmouth had just scored back-to-back wins over Nauset and Pembroke. Let’s see if Falmouth can carry some of that momentum into next season.

9. John Paul II (12-11)

This is another team that deserved better than what it got in the state tournament. The Lions lost in the Division 5 Round of 32 in five sets to Calvary Chapel Academy. There are some tough losses to graduation, but the Lions return setter Zlata Alioshka and several other key contributors at running back.

10. Nausea (7-12)

These Warriors were a team that was on the verge of breaking through before time ran out. The Warriors were competitive and had a strong setter in Liv Richards. Richards is graduating, so Nauset will have to rebuild there, but this feels like a program that’s getting close to where it wants to be.

11. Nantucket (6-15)

The Whalers took a big dip this season, but reached the postseason, where they lost to Sandwich in the Division 4 Round of 32. First-year coach Makaila Lyons said her team still has a long way to go in terms of playing with the right attitude. She said her group made great progress by the end of the season.

12. Monomoi (5-11)

Towards the end of the season, Monomoy recorded victories over Atlantis Charter and Rising Tide. A few more wins here and there, and maybe this is a tournament team. This team will focus on improving and getting to the postseason quickly.

13. Cape Cod Academy (5-13)

Another team that didn’t make it to the tournament, but has hope for the future. The Seahawks played their first varsity season this fall and made significant strides forward. Coach Robert Davis and his players have created real building blocks for this program. This team was competitive and this is a team to keep an eye on next year.

14. Sturgis East (4-13)

It was a tough year for the Storm, but it ended on a high note. The team recorded a 3-0 victory over Rising Tide towards the end of the season. This program will need to focus on the positives as it moves into next year.

15. Upper Cape (1-15)

Another team that had its ups and downs, the Rams will see better days. New coach Samantha Fasoli has established her culture this season and will see improvements moving forward.
