Meet the star setter who played a major role in the national rise of SMU volleyball

Before SMU volleyball shook off powerhouses like Nebraska and Pitt, the team only had a vision of what it could be.

That’s what setter Celia Cullen bought into when she transferred from Michigan State to the Mustangs after her sophomore year for their first year under new head coach Sam Erger in 2022.

“She chose us before we were anything,” Erger told LoneStarLive.com. “These days, if you say yes to SMU, and I hope a lot of people do, you have something to get rid of. She said yes to a dream and a vision and then helped make that vision a reality.”

Cullen was a highly rated prospect from Brighton, Michigan, about 40 miles outside of East Lansing.

She took a chance on SMU before a move to the ACC was assured and before Erger had even coached a game at The Hilltop.

During her three seasons with the Mustangs, Cullen has proven to be one of the key figures driving their development as a nationally relevant program.

While her career isn’t over yet — with No. 10 SMU likely headed to the NCAA Tournament this season — she has already left a lasting legacy on the program.

“She’s the type of kid who says, if this is football, you’re going to build a statue for that kid,” Erger said. “They helped make this possible. She is the one who is remembered, I think that is a very special type of player.”
