How Purdy Allen helped from the 49ers sideline against Packers

How Purdy helped Allen from the sideline of 49ers vs. Packers originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Quarterback Brock Purdy was unable to play in the 49ers’ 38-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday due to a shoulder injury.

But that didn’t stop him from doing what he could on the sidelines to help his temporary replacement, San Francisco backup Brandon Allen.

After the game, Allen praised Purdy’s help as an extra set of eyes between drives.

“(Purdy) was great,” Allen told reporters. “He asked how I saw it, what he saw. Some of the rotation things they had and how he saw it. Ideas on where he could get the ball. But he was very helpful on the sideline for me.”

While the 49ers’ loss doesn’t inspire much confidence going forward, Allen put in a solid performance for a backup quarterback given the circumstances. With left tackle Trent Williams inactive, Allen went 17 for 19 for 199 yards and a touchdown to tight end George Kittle.

Allen did throw an interception, although you could say it wasn’t really his fault as the throw was deflected off receiver Deebo Samuel’s hands. Allen also fumbled once when he was sacked in the second half.

Still — especially considering San Francisco’s nine penalties for 77 yards — it’s hard to expect more from a backup quarterback making his first regular-season start in three years. And given Allen’s comments, Purdy’s advice could have played a major role in that solid performance.

That, in turn, could give coach Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers more confidence going forward if they ever need Allen to replace Purdy again.
