NEW YORK (PIX11) – Jessica Tisch will be only the second woman to become commissioner of the NYPD when she takes over the department next week, according to Mayor Eric Adams.

The current Department of Sanitation commissioner, who spent 12 years with the NYPD, will replace interim NYPD Commissioner Tom Donlon, who agreed to fill in temporarily after Edward Caban resigned amid federal investigations.

Tisch starts her new position on Monday. She is the second woman after Keechant Sewell to be the city’s top cop.

“I’m looking forward to coming home. There’s a reason you’re called the best,” Tisch said.

Tisch was a counterterrorism analyst for the NYPD before rising through the ranks and eventually overseeing the NYPD’s 911 operations. She also managed how the NYPD’s body-worn cameras were used.

In her new role, she said her priorities will be to protect police and bring the department into the next century with new training and technology.

“I will always honor that work,” Tisch said of officers’ efforts to keep the city safe.

She was appointed DSNY commissioner in April 2022 and is behind the “Trash Revolution,” which calls for 70% of the city’s trash to be placed in dumpsters to control the rat problem.

Adams also announced that an additional 1,600 officers will be patrolling the city’s streets by October 2025, bringing the total to approximately 34,000 officers in the department.

In recent days, four people were stabbed to death and an NYPD officer was shot while on duty in Queens.

Ramon Rivera, 51, is accused of killing three people in a series of unprovoked attacks in Manhattan on Monday.

Gary Worthy, 57, who shot the officer in the leg, was wanted for committing two armed robberies within an hour on Tuesday. Worthy was killed during the shootout with police.
