Nebraska’s Merritt Beason No. 1 pick in pro volleyball draft

Nebraska’s Merritt Beason was the first player chosen Monday in the Pro Volleyball Federation draft.

The Atlanta Vibe, coached by former Husker Kayla Banwarth, traded up to get the No. 1 selection. Banwarth was named the new coach of the Vibe, last year’s PVF regular-season champion, in July.

Beason had 11 kills in her final regular-season match at the Devaney Center on Saturday night in Nebraska’s sweep of Wisconsin. She is second on the team in kills with 288.

Creighton’s Norah Sis was selected as the No. 3 pick in the first round by the Orlando Valkyries. The graduate of Papillion-La Vista leads the Bluejays in kills with 366.

Drafting last in the first round of the eight-team draft, the defending postseason champion Omaha Supernovas selected middle blocker Toyosi Onabanjo from Kansas. She has 217 kills and 101 blocks this season for the Jayhawks.

Omaha has six selections in the five-round draft.

In the second round, Omaha selected Ohio State’s Emily Londot and USC’s Ally Batenhorst. Londot has 480 kills this season while Batenhorst, a former Husker, has 416 for the Trojans.
