The College Football Playoff is so close you can almost smell the overreactions coming from the football kitchen. There will be another aperitif on Tuesday to get us started until the final selection of the slices is known.

ESPN will rebroadcast the CFP rankings in a live show, airing live at 8:00 PM ET. That’s the moment when everything we knew a week ago is thrown into the trash, and we can once again debate the latest projections.

With Alabama falling to Oklahoma and Ole Miss getting punched in the gut by Florida, there are sure to be some new faces in this week’s version of the bracket projections.

Keep this page here for the latest news and how to view the latest CFP release.

Based on the latest CFP rankings and projections.

First round:

  • No. 16 State Arizona and No. 2 State Ohio
  • No. 8 Tennessee at No. 7 Georgia
  • No. 10 Indiana at No. 4 Penn State
  • No. 9 SMU at No. 5 Notre Dame

Quarter finals:

  • (Arizona State winner vs. Ohio State) vs. No. 11 Boise State
  • (Winner of Tennessee vs. Georgia) vs. No. 1 Oregon
  • (Winner of Indiana vs. Penn State) vs. No. 6 Miami
  • (Winner of SMU vs. Notre Dame) vs. No. 3 Texas

In this week’s rankings, Clemson and Alabama are the first teams to be eliminated. Clemson has its fate in its own hands as it plays against South Carolina this week. That would be a strong win that should push Clemson into the playoff if a team above them loses or struggles in one of their final games.

Alabama, meanwhile, has a tougher road to the playoffs. After their embarrassing loss to Oklahoma, it will be difficult for the selection committee to place the Crimson Tide in that twelve-team pool. With only Auburn left on the schedule, the Crimson Tide will likely need several teams above them to collapse before they can sneak into the CFP.

Always Oriental.

The College Football Playoffs rankings are released each week via a CFP rankings show broadcast by ESPN every Tuesday, November 5 through December 3. This week’s show airs starting at 8:00 PM ET and ends at 9:00 PM ET.

This season, for the first time, twelve teams will participate in the College Football Playoff. College football introduced the CFP earlier in 2014 with a four-team format. The expansion to 12 teams is planned for the 2024 and 2025 college football seasons. Leaders within the sport have not yet agreed on the framework for the playoffs at this time.

The twelve participating teams in the College Football Playoff round are the five conference champions ranked highest by the CFP Selection Committee, and the next seven highest ranked teams.

The four highest-ranked conference champions are seeded one through four and receive a bye in the first round. The fifth conference champion is seeded where he was among the top twelve teams, or at number 12 if he is outside the top twelve in the CFP rankings. Non-conference champions ranked in the top four will be seeded starting at No. 5.

“As a result,” the CFP warns on its website, “the placement, 1 through 12, may look different than the final ranking.”

For the first round, the higher-ranked team in each pairing (5 vs. 12, 6 vs. 11, 7 vs. 10, 8 vs. 9) will serve as the on-campus host. The winners will advance to the quarterfinals and match up with the corresponding top-four conference champion based on seeding. Quarterfinals will be played in the Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The semifinals – played at the Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl Classic – will take place from January 9 to 10.

The two semifinal winners will play for the national championship on January 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. – Mark Giannotto
