Dodgers, Blake Snell agree to $182M deal in first big splash of MLB offseason: reports

The Los Angeles Dodgers continued their spending spree from last year, even after winning the World Series.

The Dodgers went further into their unrestricted pocket, signing Blake Snell to a five-year contract worth $182 million, according to multiple reports.

Of course, some other reports also say the deal is being postponed.

The Dodgers raked in more than $1 billion in contracts last year, and they’ve now completed their first nine-figure deal of the offseason, less than a month after winning the Fall Classic.

Snell joined the San Francisco Giants last offseason on a two-year contract that included an opt-out after his Cy Young Award-winning campaign in 2023. But teams were afraid to commit to him, leaving him remained a free agent until March.

His season got off to a rough start, as he had a 9.51 ERA in his first six starts – he also picked up an IL stint in that frame. But in his last 14 appearances, he has pitched to a minuscule 1.23 ERA, striking out 114 batters in 80.1 innings. Understandably, the Dodgers like what they see on the left side.

Los Angeles is trying to get Shohei Ohtani back into the rotation, and it remains to be seen the fate of Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler – the former will likely stay in LA and remain a career Dodger, if he doesn’t retire.

But they’ll also have Tyler Glasnow back, and they’re the favorites to land Japanese phenom Roki Sasaki, just like they did with Yoshinobu Yamamoto last year.

Snell has become one of the more underrated weapons in baseball, likely due to his lack of depth in games. He threw a no-hitter in 2024, but that was the first time he had ever hit an out in the eighth inning in his career.

His 11.2 K/9 is the best in MLB history, and his career ERA is a 3.19. While he only has one All-Star nod, he is at least borderline Hall of Fame quiet.

Snell turns 32 next week, so the Dodgers may be taking some risk, but it’s pretty clear they can outdo any potential mistake they make.

The first big splash goes to the Dodgers… and they’re probably not done yet.
