Alex Karaban suffers a head injury in UConn’s loss and is sent to the local hospital

LAHAINA, Hawaii – Alex Karaban was transported by ambulance to a Maui hospital after suffering a head injury during the UConn men’s basketball team’s loss to Dayton on Wednesday night.

Karaban was fouled while driving to the basket with about 2 1/2 minutes left in the Huskies’ 85-67 loss and hit his head on the ground. He hit one of two foul shots and stayed in the game, but was then placed in the concussion protocol and sent to the hospital for a CAT scan.

“He looks pretty good,” UConn team doctor Robert Arciero reported. “We can’t predict what the scan will be, but we expect it to be normal.”

The hospital Karaban was sent to is on the other side of the island of Maui, and UConn was still trying to figure out whether Karaban should stay behind (with someone from the team’s staff) while the rest of the team flew back to Connecticut . . The Huskies’ charter was scheduled to depart around midnight local time.

Karaban, UConn’s leading scorer and a three-year starter, scored a game-high 21 points in Wednesday’s loss.
