2 areas in the Atlantic Ocean are being watched for tropical development

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – The National Hurricane Center is monitoring two areas in the Atlantic Ocean for possible tropical development.

A low pressure area a few hundred miles southeast of Bermuda is producing a small area of scattered showers and thunderstorms. But meteorologists say dry air and strong upper-level winds are expected to limit further development over the next day or so as it moves north to north-northeastward at about 10 mph.

The center estimates that the chance of the virus developing within the next seven days is only 10 percent.

But it offers a slightly better chance of development in an area of the central tropical Atlantic, where a low pressure area could form within a few days.

Environmental conditions are said to be more likely to allow the system to develop slowly this weekend or early next week, moving west or west-northwest at 10 to 15 mph (16 to 24 km/h).

There is a 20 percent chance that it will become at least a tropical depression in the next seven days.

If either eventually develops into the sixth tropical storm of the season, it will be named Francine.
