2 Sun stars who won’t be back next year after playoff loss to Lynx

The Minnesota Lynx defeated the Connecticut Sun by a final score of 88-77 in Game 5 of the WNBA Semifinals on Tuesday night. Minnesota secured a spot in the WNBA Finals with the win, where they will face the talented New York Liberty. While Connecticut made things interesting, their 2024 season is now officially over.

The Sun would like to compete again in 2025, but they will have work to do in the offseason. Two star players could also leave this off-season. Here are two players who won’t be back next year after the Sun’s loss to the Lynx.

At 37 years old, Bonner is still one of the better players in the WNBA. She is set to hit free agency this offseason and will likely draw interest from across the WNBA.

However, at age 37, there’s a chance Bonner could retire. Nothing is guaranteed at the time of writing this story. If she decides to continue playing, the Sun will face competition in attempting to re-sign her.

Bonner averaged 15 points per game last season. She led the Sun to the postseason and Bonner had some big moments in the playoffs. If she decides to continue playing, you have to imagine the Sun will be interested in a reunion. Bonner is nearing the end of her career and could decide to sign with a team that has a better chance of winning a championship.

Thomas, 32, has spent her entire WNBA career with the Sun. The Sun has endured ups and downs over the past decade, but Thomas has established himself as a star. Will Thomas really consider leaving the only WNBA team she’s ever known?

The fact is that Connecticut fell short again in the postseason. Thomas certainly wants to compete for a championship and she is headed to free agency during the offseason. If a true champion tries to sign her, you have to imagine Thomas will at least listen to the team’s offer.

Again, familiarity is important. Thomas could decide to re-sign with the Sun. But maybe she ultimately wants something new.

The 32-year-old likely has several strong seasons left in the WNBA and she will be among the hottest free agents during the upcoming offseason.
