It’s never too early to start thinking about next season! Even though we don’t have a 2024 World Series champion, we Doing have our first version of Fantasy Baseball Projections ready for 2025, powered by Pitcher List’s PLV.

These projections include past performance (with recent results given more weight) and underlying metrics (particularly our PLV series of hitter and pitcher metrics). Each projected metric combines past performance and underlying components with unique weights and regression amounts to best estimate next season’s performance. This has three important consequences:

• Each metric has a different impact window for projection. For example: Batter Stolen Base Attempt Rate is heavily dependent on the most recent year’s results, while Pitcher GB% has a more even weighting over the past three seasons.
• Each stat has a different location on the randomness/skill spectrum when projecting. For example: Pitcher HR/FB% is quite noisy and drops sharply towards league average for subsequent seasons, while K% is a better indicator of a player’s talent and only drops slightly.
• Each expected metric has a different balance between the use of results and the underlying metrics. For example, Pitcher BB% results have a higher weighting for the projection, while the underlying metrics make up a larger share of the projected K%.

In V1 of the projections, playing time is standardized: hitters received 600 PA, while starters received 160IP and relievers received 60IP (a distinction between Starter and Reliever is made based on the estimated number of games played that were starts). This version also only includes players with a certain amount of MLB playing time last season (5+ IP for pitchers, 100+ PA for hitters). These restrictions will be reduced/removed in future versions, and MiLB/international players will also be included in future versions.
