3 important tips for a dramatic victory

The Utah Jazz dramatically recorded their third win of the season against the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday evening, 115-113. With the game tied in the final seconds, Jordan Clarkson found John Collins wide open under the basket for the winning bucket. The victory was the team’s first home victory this season and had two major themes that helped the Jazz secure the win.

The team’s youth showed up in a major way tonight, especially during the first three quarters. Kyle Filipowski had 14 points and seven rebounds on a very efficient 6-for-10 shooting night. Flip was back in the starting line-up alongside Lauri Markkanen and John Collins. Starting Filipowski gave the Jazz’s first group an infusion of playmaking, rebounding and overall scoring. Flip was one of the brightest spots for the Jazz early in the season and continued to show that tonight.

Keyonte George played well again tonight. His six assists led the team and he had one of his most efficient shooting nights of the young season, going 4-for-7 from deep and 5-for-10 overall. The second-year guard seemed committed defensively and consistently set his teammates up on offense.

Both Isaiah Collier and Cody Williams showed flashes off the bench tonight. Collier’s three steals gave the Jazz some easy wins in transition. Williams looked more aggressive with his new substitution pattern, a good sign for the future.

John Collins has had an exceptional start to the year. He delivered 28 points, 9 boards and 3 assists in another inspiring performance tonight. His energy is infectious for the youthful Jazz, whether he starts or comes off the bench.

Next to him was former Sixth Man of the Year, Jordan Clarkson. JC went for 20 points in the win, making numerous clutch plays along the way to help the Jazz prevail. The most consequential of those plays involved Clarkson lulling superstar Luka Doncic and firing a pass right behind him.

For a number of vets who could be available on the trade market later this year, both have convincingly proven their worth in this league.

General

Tonight showed what a mix of talented youth and experienced leadership can look like in a rebuilding team. The contributions of the rookies in particular should give the fans a good feeling. There will be plenty of nights in the future that won’t go Jazz style, but tonight a win feels pretty good. The Jazz are back in action on Saturday night against the Sacramento Kings.
