4 takeaways from Bruins OT loss in Utah

The Bruins spent much of their first trip to Utah living dangerously and got away with it for most of the night.

But their luck ran out in overtime when Michael Kesselring ripped a shot past Jeremy Swayman to give the Utah Hockey Club a 2-1 win over Boston at the Delta Center in the teams’ first meeting since the Coyotes moved from Arizona.

Naturally, a fourth-liner for the Bruins (3-2-1) scored their only goal of the game. But Cole Koepke didn’t skate with his regular linemates as he gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead.

It was Brad Marchand who set it up with 7:11 left in the second period for Koepke’s third goal of the season.

Jeremy Swayman, some luck and a smart challenge kept that lead alive deep into the third.

Kailer Yamamoto appeared to have tied the game with 13:12 remaining, but the Bruins’ video staff quickly determined Utah was offside and Jim Montgomery’s challenge canceled out the goal.

Vladislav Kolyachonok’s equalizer could not be reversed with 5:09 left in the third period, which forced overtime.

David Pastrnak was whistled for a tripping penalty 42 seconds into the 3-on-3 session, immediately putting the Bruins on their heels. Boston converted the penalty, but four seconds after Pastrnak’s release, Kesselring scored the winner.

Jeremy Swayman made 31 saves.

The Bruins are in Nashville on Tuesday.

Below are four takeaways from Saturday’s defeat:

Jeremy Swayman deserved better — Swayman seemed every bit a part of the No. 1 goal in Saturday’s loss. He made 31 saves and kept the Bruins in the game. He was especially good early with 10 saves in the first and 12 in the second.

Jim Montgomery is still experimenting with his second line — Justin Brazeau became the third player to get the opportunity to play alongside Brad Marchand and Charlie Coyle. He followed Morgan Geekie and Trent Frederic.

The Bruins were not strong with the puck — The Bruins hadn’t had more than 17 giveaways all season, but opened the game with 11 in the first period. They had 22 in the game.

Nikita Zadarov has a career penalty shootout — New Bruins Nikita Zadorov has had at least one penalty in all six games for the Bruins so far. He has eight penalties in 19 minutes so far. The Bruins have been an NHL leader 29 times. Boston killed all four penalties on Saturday.
