49ers inactive: Charvarius Ward and Malik Mustapha start against Chiefs

There were no surprises after the San Francisco 49ers released their inactive list ahead of Sunday’s Week 7 game against the Kansas City Chiefs:

WR Jauan Jennings

TE Brayden Willis

KJake Moody

OL Ben Barch

LB Jalen Graham

CB Darrell Luter

QB Joshua Dobbs (3rd QB)

Luter and Jennings didn’t practice all week, and Kyle Shanahan said he doesn’t expect Moody to return before the bye week.

The injury news that is perhaps the most important today and that no one is mentioning is that Malik Mustapha is not on the injury report after taking full part in training on Friday.

Mustapha gives the 49ers a safety threat against the run and pass. You can trust him as a tackler, as a deep safety and when he plays in the box. When a rookie can handle multiple roles, you can play multiple roles as a defense.

The 49ers also welcome back cornerback Charvarius Ward. It will be interesting to see how the cornerback rotation plays out opposite Ward. Last week Renardo Green proved he could handle a bigger workload against competent curators.

This week, the Chiefs only have one healthy player they trust. Will Green be necessary? Would they trust him to defend the tight ends? We’ll find out.
