The San Francisco 49ers received the ball to start the game. That was perhaps the only normal thing that could happen in the first quarter.

The 49ers offense went three-and-out to start the game.

The Kansas City Chiefs, after giving up a pair of first downs, attempted a fake punt on 4th and 1, but the defense sniffed it out for a stop. I’m sure Nick Sorensen and the coaching staff are pleased with Kansas City’s attempt to gain yards without Patrick Mahomes on the field.

Brock Purdy stared down George Kittle on the ensuing play. Safety Justin Reid jumped into the throwing lane to force an interception. So the Niners lost enormous field position.

Mahomes found Noah Gray for a 26-yard gain on the next play, and the Chiefs were inside the red zone. Nick Bosa and Leonard Floyd sacked Mahomes to force a 2nd-and-15. Then Kalia Davis had the awareness to tap the ball in the air and catch it herself for a much-needed turnover.

Both teams traded punts before Anders Carlson broke the scoring with a 55-yard field goal on the fourth drive of the game for the 49ers.

After one quarter, the offense had 28 yards on ten plays, and Purdy went 1-for-4 for eight yards and an interception. They looked confused, awkward and didn’t know what to do against Steve Spagnuolo.
