5 things to watch Green Bay Packers Week 6 game vs. Arizona Cardinals

play

GREEN BAY – Here are five things to watch when the Green Bay Packers face the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

Will the receiver rotation return to normal or will Romeo Doubs have to get himself back on track?

Receiver Romeo Doubs returned to practice following a one-game suspension after skipping practice Thursday and Friday and appears on track to play Sunday against Arizona. But what will his role be? The coaches still seem very interested in involving Dontayvion Wicks in the attack and the possible return of Christian Watson from an ankle sprain could put pressure on the receiver position. Jayden Reed is the guy the coaches want to open up the most, so Doubs’ role may not be as big as he hopes. It appears Doubs returned to work without any sign of misfortune. “He’s been a professional,” offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich said. “There have been no warning signs or anything like that. He’s gone out and had two good days of practice so far. We’ll just move on from there.” The big question is whether he stays focused when he doesn’t get the ball.

Penalties have hurt the offense more than the defense

The Packers rank sixth in most penalties committed this season, with 40. They have committed 25 on offense, 11 on defense and six on special teams. They have lost 189 yards to their offensive penalties and it has led to their offense being disjointed at times. They shortened their flags against the Los Angeles Rams last week (six for 34 yards), but they had a false start that pushed them back inside their own 10-yard line and two false starts on a fourth-quarter drive that took up a lot of time took. 8 minutes, but stalled on the 50-yard line. “We have penalties and that puts us behind the sticks,” Stenavich said. “I would say penalties and drops are two big things that we really need to clean up so we can definitely be the best offense.”

What role will Keisean Nixon play in the defense?

Defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley has been open about his desire to get rookie safety Javon Bullard in a position where he can use his physical tools near the line of scrimmage. Against the Rams, he used Bullard as the nickel slot corner in place of Keisean Nixon, who was moved outside to fill in for the injured Jaire Alexander. When Alexander returns this week, Hafley will have to decide whether to bring Nixon back in, stay with Bullard or rotate the two. Another option would be to move Nixon to where Eric Stokes and Carrington Valentine are splitting shots. Stokes and Valentine haven’t handled it well and while Nixon isn’t as polished in terms of reporting as the other two, he isn’t afraid to stick his nose into the fray and enjoys challenging opponents. “Look what he was able to do,” Hafley said. “His coverage was tight. He’s been confused. He has been aggressive against the run. What you start to see when you watch the film is that he starts to play the human very well, which is huge to play both on the outside and on the inside. And he brings physicality from the corner position.”

Hafley wasn’t worried about opponents blocking his pass rushers

The Packers have seen opposing teams try to slow their pass rush with chip blocks from their backs and tight ends. Hafley said he employed some maneuvers to keep his top rushers from having to face additional blockers, but there were still instances where the Rams were able to slow the rush with their backs. One way to eliminate double teams is to rush more than four, but Hafley said he’s okay with his linemen drawing extra attention because it hurts the strength of the offense. “There are certainly ways we can help,” Hafley said. “You can’t do it all the time, but there are certainly things we can do. When we talk about pressure and sacks, if teams want to chip us here and there and use the back end in seven-man protection, and we only have to cover three wide receivers, then our winning percentage goes up. ”

First-round pick Jordan Morgan could be back in the mix this week

After missing three games due to a shoulder injury dating back to training camp, first-round pick Jordan Morgan appears healthy and ready to return to action. At the time he was injured, he was talking to guard Sean Rhyan. Since Morgan has been gone, Rhyan has been getting all the attention at right guard and doing a good job. However, Rhyan’s consistency is not where it should be and Morgan has too much potential to be left on the bench. So Morgan will be included in the rotation again. “I think his potential is extremely high,” Stenavich said. “I think he’s going to be a very good player. So it would be foolish of us not to implement that as soon as possible. The only way to really do that is to let him play there. I expect that as soon as he is ready to go, we will bring him out in whatever role.”
