#6 Volleyball scores Xavier for the ninth win in a row

OMAHA, bornAva Martin had a match-high 15 kills and hit .467, leading the sixth-ranked Creighton Volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Xavier on Friday night at DJ Sokol Arena. The scores of the Bluejay victory were 25-14, 25-19, 25-19.

In addition to Martin’s big night, Kendra Wait had 37 assists and 10 digs while Norah sister scored 12 digs and nine digs for the Bluejays, who played without offsides Elise Goetzinger. Maddy Bilinović added 18 digs and two aces, Alivia Hausmann matched her season high with three aces and came from Cincinnati Sydney Breissinger owned 10 digs, an ace and her second career kill against her hometown team. The Bluejays hit .342 and finished with 49 kills, 59 digs, nine aces and 7.5 blocks.

Xavier (6-11, 4-3 BIG EAST) was led by 10 kills and 12 digs by Emma Grace, in addition to 15 digs by libero Lucia Corsaro. The Musketeers had 31 kills, 46 digs, six blocks and four aces on .173 hitting.

Creighton (16-2, 7-0 BIG EAST) surrendered the first point of the match before Bilinovic served up a five-point run to put CU ahead for good in the opener. The margin grew to 12-5 after a portion blitz from Hausmann, and grew three times to nine. Sister had seven kills and Bilinovic six digs in the lid lifter as CU hit .500 and held the Muskies to .111.

Xavier led to 13-12 in the second set, but CU answered with a three-point burst after a timeout to take control. CU scored five of the last seven points to take the second set victory 25-19. Martin had six kills in the second set and Hausmann wrote her final two aces on consecutive points midway through the set. CU hit .412 to offset a visiting Xavier club that attacked at a .289 clip.

The Bluejays used a 7-1 run in the final frame to take the lead 22-14. By Sky McCune In her first appearance in five weeks, she served an ace in her first point back, extending the CU lead to 24-15, and a service error five points later by Xavier would end Creighton’s 13th sweep of the season. Martin had seven kills in the final set, while Bilinovic added eight digs. CU held DePaul to .111 in the final frame.

CU returns to the field Sunday at 1 p.m. to host DePaul in the program’s 17th annual Pink Out game.
