Apple has released iOS 18, the latest software update for its iPhone devices. Monday’s update comes ahead of the new iPhone 16 release and includes changes to the Home screen and Control Center, updates to Messages and a redesign for the Photos app, among other changes.

The software update was first announced during the tech company’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, alongside an announcement about Apple Intelligence, which was not included in Monday’s release.

Here’s what you need to know about the update and some of its key features:

Home screen and control center customization

Your phone’s home screen, but ✨aesthetic.✨ Apple is finally giving users more customization options for the iPhone’s home screen.

In the iOS 18 update, users can place app icons and widgets in more flexible ways, virtually anywhere there is an open position on the screen. Users can also make app icons and widgets appear larger or choose to remove the name from underneath them.

There are also color tint options, allowing users to apply any color they want to apps/widgets or get suggestions for a color that matches the background.

Dark Mode now also applies to icons, so they either automatically adjust when an iPhone turns on Dark Mode or always stay that way.

Even more customization options are available in Control Center, including grouped controls, the ability to resize controls, a gallery view to see all available controls, and more support for third-party app controls.

Updates to the Messages app

Changes to the Messages apps in iOS 18 include more text effects, adding animated effects like ripples or bends to letters, words, and emoji in iMessage. Users can also format text in Messages, adding bold, underlined, strikethrough, or italics to letters and words.

There are more ‘Tapback’ reactions, where users can add emojis and sticker reactions to messages. Users can also access the Tapbacks that you and your friends send the most.

Users can choose to ‘send later’ messages and schedule them to be delivered later.

RCS (Rich Communication Services) is now supported, including delivery and read receipts and higher resolution photos and videos for messaging non-iPhone users.

Password app

iOS 18 introduces a new, standalone Passwords app. Passwords were previously hidden in Settings, but are now easier to access. Verification codes for two-factor authentication can also be set up in the Passwords app.

Change photos

The Photos app has been redesigned in iOS 18. Collections organize the library by subject, and users can pin a collection or further customize collections. Users can also view photos by “recent days.”

A filter button lets you search by specific media type, favorites, or other views, reducing clutter.

Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence, the much-hyped new AI-based feature first announced at WWDC, is not part of Monday’s iOS 18 update rollout. Apple said in a press release that users will experience Apple Intelligence features when iOS 18.1 rolls out next month.

When it releases, Apple Intelligence integration, coming to the new iPhone 16 devices and iPhone 15 Pro models, will bring capabilities to Siri, Photos and many other apps, including help with composing emails and other documents, finding and organizing files and photos, and performing tasks. Apple Intelligence will also include AI-generated emojis called “Genmojis” and a new Image Playground.
