    ‘A Minecraft Movie’ trailer divides some fans: see reactions

    Fans of the hugely popular game took to social media to voice their opinions when Warner Bros. released the trailer for “A Minecraft Movie” on Wednesday.

    It wasn’t long after Warner Bros. Pictures released the first teaser trailer for “A Minecraft Movie” that fans of the massively popular franchise made it clear what they thought of it.

    “A Minecraft Movie” is the latest video game to be adapted into a movie. It stars Jason Momoa as a real person and Jack Black as “expert crafter” Steve. This is the closest game has to a playable protagonist.

    Since Minecraft – known for its iconic cubic visuals – is one of the best-selling video games of all time, it’s no surprise that many fans had… thoughts about the first look at the film.

    Directed by Jared Hess (“Napoleon Dynamite,” “Nacho Libre”), the Minecraft adaptation looks to blend the game’s blocky style with real life, leaving fans baffled, many of whom quickly took to social media after the trailer dropped on Wednesday to criticize the film’s animation, character portraits and use of CGI.

    Trailer Gives First Look at Black, Momoa in Minecraft Movie

    Minecraft’s signature building blocks, monsters and villains are all featured in the teaser trailer, which is set for The Beatles’ “Magical Mystery Tour.”

    In the trailer, Momoa plays Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, a man who is mysteriously brought into the world of the popular video game, along with “Wednesday” star Emma Myers, “Orange is the New Black” star Danielle Brooks and Sebastian Eugene Hansen.

    Black also appears and dramatically introduces himself to the group as Steve.

    Jennifer Coolidge, who will also appear in the film, is not seen in the trailer.

    What is the Minecraft movie about?

    “A Minecraft Movie” is of course based on the iconic sandbox world-building game that was released in 2011.

    In an official synopsis, Warner Bros. describes the plot as four misfits who find themselves in the cube world of Minecraft and must protect it from enemies including the game’s Piglins and Zombies as they embark on a mission to return home.

    Mixed reactions to ‘A Minecraft Movie’ teaser

    Many loyal Minecraft fans felt that the film’s visual style was an unwelcome departure from the pixelated world that had made the game unique. Instead, fans expressed disappointment at the perceived over-reliance on CGI and the disturbingly realistic creature designs.

    Polarizing views took over social media, and even some news outlets – one writer at Esquire complained that the trailer release “ruined my week.” Another at PC Gamer declared that the Minecraft movie could replace the acclaimed Borderlands adaptation as “the worst thing to happen to cinema in 2024.”

    On X, formerly Twitter, some users compared the footage in the trailer to an AI-generated rendering.

    Others didn’t like the combination of live action and CGI.

    Voice actor Michael Edwards criticized the choice to turn Minecraft into a live-action film instead of making it an animated film.

    “I don’t understand the decision to have live-action actors in the Minecraft world when Minecraft translates so incredibly well to animation,” Edwards posted on X. “The green screen here is terrible.”

    Others on social media were shocked by the animal designs, with the blocky animals in the game suddenly looking suspiciously like their real-life counterparts.

    One user on X even compared the creative choice to the fiasco surrounding the reveal of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie version, which sent animators back to the drawing board in 2020.

    “Realistic animation will ruin us all,” declared X user TommyInnit.

    Others were simply baffled by Momoa’s choice of wig.
