A series of moderate earthquakes rocks the Northern California coast – NBC Bay Area

A series of earthquakes measuring between 3.6 and 4.4 rocked the Northern California coast late Wednesday, according to the United States Geological Survey.

Four moderately strong earthquakes occurred in the same area, about 36 miles (58 kilometers) south of Eureka in Humboldt County, the USGS said.

The first earthquake, with a magnitude of 3.6, occurred at 10:56 p.m. That was followed by aftershocks measuring 4.1 at 11:18 p.m., 4.4 at 11:58 p.m. and 3.9 at 11:59 p.m., according to the USGS.

A fifth quake struck in the same area and measured 2.9 on the Richter scale at 5:48 am on Thursday.
