A Southside Chicago resident believes Trump is gaining support

A resident of Chicago’s South Side told Fox News Digital on Wednesday that many voters in his neighborhood support former President Trump.

“I think a lot of people in my neighborhood honestly go with Trump,” said Eric Boyds, a South Side Chicago native and Trump supporter.

“I think he just has a way of connecting with our people,” he added.

Chicago’s South Side is primarily made up of black residents. About 75% of the community is black and 19% is Hispanic, according to city census data.

“A lot of the people I talk to on the South Side are leaning a little bit toward Trump,” Demetrius told Fox News Digital.

Demetrius explained that the growing support for Trump among South Side Chicago residents is due to the former president’s outreach to “people living in poverty.”

“To those people, I think his contributions really helped them a little bit in their minds … he helped change the economy for them at that point,” he said before revealing he would support Vice President Kamala Harris.

“In my opinion, I can’t agree with it,” he said.

On the other hand, other residents of Chicago’s South Side said everyone they know is “going for Kamala.”

“I don’t think anyone I know is going for Trump,” Brittany said.

Trump lost Illinois to President Biden by a 17-point margin in the 2020 election. Chicago went overwhelmingly for Biden, winning more than 90% in some departments.

Fox News’ latest national poll shows Harris beating Trump by two points.

Fox News’ new national survey shows a 3 percentage point shift among registered voters in the 2024 presidential election since mid-August. Trump had a 1-point lead last month, while Harris has a 2-point lead today at 50% -48%. For reference, in July, Trump was ahead of President Biden by 1 point. Each of these differences is within the margin of error.

Quentin, a supporter of Harris, said the Democratic candidate “gained a lot of ground this past week” among residents of Chicago’s suburbs and South Side neighborhood.

“I think she looks a little bit stronger right now – just how she answers the questions – how she responds to people… she’s showing that she can be a reliable candidate.”

Emmanuel said he was leaning more toward Trump.

“Trump helped people the most when he was in power,” he said. “That’s just the honest truth.”

Ben, who lived in Chicago for four years, says he’s leaning toward Kamala. He added that Trump seemed too old.

“Just not someone I’m too crazy about or too excited about my position,” Ben said.
