A winter storm could hit Minnesota next week

Minnesota could see its first winter storm of the season next week after an unusually warm fall.

The weather will definitely turn to winter next week, with a storm system moving into Minnesota and Wisconsin on Tuesday, National Weather Service Twin Cities meteorologist Brent Hewett said. The storm system will bring rain, possibly heavy, with temperatures in the 40s, he said.

Those further north or west with cooler temperatures could see some snow from that storm system. The weather will likely stick to rain in the Twin Cities metro area, he said.

“There’s still a fair amount of uncertainty behind that system, but we will certainly see a shift to cooler temperatures, with highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s,” Hewett said.

We’re still a week away, but those temperatures could bring snow or ice, Hewett said.

This is a good time to prepare for cold weather, especially since people may not be able to exercise after last year’s warm winter, he said. Make arrangements for snow tires and put your winter safety gear back in your car, including extra jackets, flashlights and a small snow shovel, he said.

“If there’s any outdoor stuff you need to tackle, tackle it this weekend when it’s in the 50s,” Hewett said.
