CHICAGO (CBS) — Prepare for temperatures in the 80s.

After a mild start with temperatures in the 60s, we are headed for record heat this afternoon.

The forecast high temperature today is 82 degrees, while the current high temperature record is 78 degrees, a record set in 1999. This is more than 20 degrees warmer than where we should be for this time of year. The average high temperature is 57 degrees.

Winds can sometimes blow faster than 55 km/h, which can lead to difficult driving conditions and increased fire risk. Red flag warnings have been issued due to the dry conditions, high winds and warm temperatures.

Mild temperatures will continue Tuesday evening, with lows dropping into the mid and upper 60s.

It will remain warm and windy on Wednesday, with temperatures once again peaking in the lower 80s.

The next chance of rain returns late Wednesday. The rain will increase in intensity during the night, followed by remaining showers until Thursday morning.

Trick-or-treat times during the evening, then expect drier conditions, with temperatures dropping into the 50s.
