According to reporting by The New York Post, officials said the suspect in the Apalachee High School shooting that opened fire in Winder, resulting in the deaths of two students and two teachers, is facing felony charges. The college-aged teen has been charged with four counts of aggravated murder in connection with the shooting on Wednesday, September 4, at the time of writing.

“The investigation into the shooting at Apalachee HS remains active and ongoing,” the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a statement, adding that more charges are expected. Gray’s motive remains unclear.

He was reportedly arrested by authorities minutes after the Georgia school shooting broke out, a month after students returned to class in August.

Colt Gray’s aunt claims he struggled with mental health issues

Adding to the details released so far about the young suspect, his aunt, Annie Polhamus Brown, told the Washington Post on Thursday that Colt was “begging everyone for help.” She suggested the teenage boy was struggling with unspecified mental health issues, claiming, “The adults around him abandoned him.”

The Florida resident declined to comment further on the matter or any alleged issues the boy was facing before Wednesday’s shooting.

Brown even took to her Facebook profile to defend her nephew: “I will take care of my nephew and what he needs on this side. Check yourself before you talk about a child who never asked to deal with the crap he saw on a daily basis.”

Responding to the angry comments directed at her cousin, the woman on the platform fulminated: “You guys are ready to see Polhamus blood in full flow? No, me neither.” She has since vowed not to leave her “cousin standing alone!!!!”

Elsewhere, she offered support to the victims’ families: “I will show NO disrespect to other parents and families dealing with this tragedy on the other side. They DO NOT DESERVE THIS!!!!” She then made her account private.

A suspected family member noted, “Colt never asked for what he went through — I support you 1000000%.”

Gray reportedly enrolled at Haymon-Morris Middle School in Barrow County in January. On August 1, he began his ninth grade year at Apalachee.

The four victims left behind in the tragic denouement were identified as 14-year-olds Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, and teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Christina Irimie, 53. Nine others were also reportedly gunshot wounds and were taken to local hospitals.

The FBI said Wednesday that Colt was previously the subject of an investigation into the threat of school shootings in May 2023.
