The Las Vegas Aces have had a shockingly lackluster start to the season, with many blaming the absence of point guard Chelsea Gray. Well, she’s been back for 17 games and Vegas is still struggling to put together a big winning streak.

Gray’s numbers have also dropped significantly on all fronts due to the limitations in the opening minutes, but my Aces vs. Wings predictions and my WNBA predictions for this matchup on August 27 explain why she will have at least six assists.

My analysis

Tuesday’s lone WNBA game features a high total, with the over/under reaching 181 points. Compare that to the sizable spread, and that’s a lot of buckets from the Las Vegas Aces.

The Dallas Wings are one of the worst defensive teams in the league, even with All-Star Satou Sabally back in the lineup. Dallas ranks dead last in defensive rating, allowing 23.3 assists on 33.3 field goals made per game — the most in the Dubs.

Things are looking good for Aces point guard Chelsea Gray, who is getting back into significant minutes after recovering from a foot injury that sidelined her at the start of the year. Gray has played more than 28 minutes per game through the first five games, while averaging just 24 minutes before the break.

She’s dishing out fewer than five assists per game this season, but with that recent surge in action, her assist percentage is climbing. Gray dished out seven dimes in the nail-biting win over Chicago, and some player forecasters are predicting more than six assists against the Wings tonight.

Her assist totals vary from book to book tonight, with some operators offering Over 4.5 at -160 and others at Over 5.5 +125. However, I’m taking advantage of FanDuel’s milestone market, which has Gray 6+ assists priced at +150. Yay for price shopping!

Given the game situation, the player prognosis, the increase in playing time and the makeup of Dallas’ abysmal defense, I’m confident Gray will drop six or more dimes.
