Aftermath of Hurricane Milton: Storm ravages Florida with tornadoes and flooding; at least 14 dead

CNN host is hit by flying debris while reporting on Hurricane Milton

At least 14 people have died after Hurricane Milton devastated parts of Florida, waking residents to survey the damage.

Milton made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane Wednesday evening near Siesta Key in Sarasota County, bringing multiple tornadoes, 28-foot waves, high winds, heavy rain and devastating storm surge.

Six people in the St. Lucie County retirement village were killed by tornadoes caused by the hurricane, after a dozen tornadoes spawned in the region within 20 minutes.

The heavy wind caused a crane to collapse into the water The Tampa Bay Times in St. Petersburg, while the roof of the Tropicana Field baseball stadium has fallen into disrepair.

More than 3.3 million Florida homes and businesses have been left powerless, with those in the west-central region hardest hit.

Millions of people were warned to evacuate, with Bradenton Police Chief Melanie giving a bleak prognosis for those who ignored advice. “What we will probably find tomorrow morning are bodies,” she told BBC Radio 4 Today program on Thursday morning.

After landfall, Milton has weakened to a Category 1 hurricane and is moving away from Florida’s east coast – where residents are still battling brutal winds and storm surge.

Classrooms are starting to reopen after Milton caused mass school closures

K-12 schools in 19 of Florida’s 67 counties will reopen Friday after classes were canceled as Hurricane Milton rapidly intensified and barreled toward the state earlier this week.

While all tropical and storm surge warnings for Milton were halted Thursday evening, schools in 34 counties opted to remain closed, the Florida Department of Education said.

The FLDOE says on its website that it will continue to work with schools “following natural disasters to ensure they have the resources needed to resume normal operations as quickly as possible.”

2.5 million homes and businesses in Florida are still without power

More than 2.5 million Florida homes and businesses have been left powerless, with those in the state’s center and west-central region hardest hit.

Hillsborough County is seeing nearly 500,000 electric customers in outages, while nearly 89 percent of customers in Highlands County are without power.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said in a news conference Thursday that tens of thousands of linemen are working to restore power in the Sunshine State.

“With the full support of the state and the preparation of more than 50,000 line operators, utilities and telecommunications providers are working diligently to restore power and connectivity to these communities as quickly as possible,” he said.

Milton wasn’t as destructive as expected, says FEMA administrator

FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell said Thursday that Milton’s impact was not as destructive as feared. Criswell will tour some of the tornado damage Friday.

“We didn’t have the extreme consequences of the worst-case scenario that we had prepared for, but there are still so many people affected by this,” she said at a news conference in Sarasota.
