Agatha’s nude scene was not scripted at all, says Kathryn Hahn

SPOILER ALERT: This story discusses the plot developments in the first episode of “Agatha All Along,” currently streaming on Disney+.

It turns out that the was Agatha, all the time.

During Wednesday’s premiere of “Agatha All Along” — Marvel Television’s sequel to the critically acclaimed “WandaVision” — audiences were treated to a lot from star Kathryn Hahn, who made a bit of cheeky Marvel history. While Marvel hasn’t shied away from showing male butts — Hulk in “Thor: Ragnaror,” Thor in “Thor: Love and Thunder” — Hahn is the first woman to bare her behind in a Marvel Studios project.

“Well, I came up with it,” Hahn explains to Variety“I thought it was good to see her stripped down like that, literally, as much as we could, which spoke to her powerlessness in this moment.”

The series follows the infamous Agatha Harkness after a suspicious goth named Teen (Joe Locke) helps her break free of the spell Scarlet Witch cast at the end of “WandaVision” that has trapped Agatha in a television universe (in her own mind) in the small town of Westview. In order to return to reality, Agatha must strip off all of her old personas from “WandaVision” — literally, she emerges from the spell naked, with only her hair strategically draped across her chest.

“At this point in the series, all of her power has been taken away from her,” Hahn says. “I mean, she really had nothing left at that point, and so it was about illustrating the gap between that moment and her regaining her power.”

According to showrunner Jac Schaeffer, Hahn went off-script when she filmed Agatha’s decision to leave her house while she was still naked. Hahn was scripted to grab a robe before running outside, but she changed her mind when she considered what Agatha herself would do at that moment.

“Kathryn was like, ‘Would she take the cloak? I don’t think she would take the cloak. I don’t think she really cares about being naked in front of the neighbors,'” Schaeffer says. “I said to her, ‘That’s the best idea I’ve ever heard.’ Kathryn’s done so much work, and she’s done a lot of nudity and stuff, so it felt really subversive to bring Kathryn Hahn’s nudity into the MCU as well.”

The scene in question was filmed with cameras strategically placed to obscure the parts of Hahn’s body that weren’t meant to be seen, with the cover of her hair doing the rest. Agatha strikes up a conversation with her neighbor, John (played by David A. Payton), and immediately panics when she realizes she’s been captured by Wanda. The cameras cut between the two actors as he tries to make her aware of her naked state and hilariously tries to convince her to put some clothes on.

Finally, she goes back inside, puts on her bathrobe and starts brainstorming an escape route.

“It’s so true to her character, and it makes me laugh out loud,” Schaeffer says. “And I mean, she looks incredible.”
