Al Roker reveals ‘Wicked’ spoiler in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade coverage

Al Roker did something bad.

On Thursday morning, the co-host of the “Today” show accidentally revealed a major spoiler from the movie “Wicked,” starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.

Roker was hosting an early morning portion of the 2024 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with Idina Menzel, 53, when he let her secret slip.

“You had a cameo in ‘Wicked’ in the movie,” Roker said.

Menzel admitted that she does indeed appear in “Wicked: Part One,” the film version of the musical, but teased Roker that it was supposed to be a surprise.

“You’re not supposed to tell anyone about the cameo!” Cat’s out of the bag,” Menzel chided.

“Cat is out of the bag!” Roker repeated before defending himself because “everyone has shared everything online.”

The actress herself has shared several photos on social media showing her in costume on set, but few knew what to expect before stepping into the theater – but we will do something bad and give it away.

In the film, Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, 56, play members of a theater company in the Emerald City who perform “One Short Day,” which tells the story of the wizard’s mythical arrival in Oz.

The dynamic duo star in a spectacular performance as Erivo’s Elphaba and Grande’s Glinda arrive in the magical city for an appointment with the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum).

“It is a source of great pride to be part of the creation and legacy that ‘Wicked’ has become. I will forever hold it dear to my heart,” Menzel said.

She famously created the role of Elphaba on Broadway alongside Chenoweth as Glinda in 2003, when the book-turned-musical-turned-movie first hit the stage.

“You’re not supposed to tell anyone about the cameo!” Cats out of the bag,” Menzel chided.

“And the film was very loving and respectful of our show and took it to new heights,” Menzel told Roker.

“Wicked: Part One” earned a whopping $114 million at the domestic box office during its opening weekend a week ago.

Menzel noted that appearing on the “Today” show with Roker — her sixth time on the parade — was a “full circle moment” because she performed on the parade as Elphaba when the show first aired nearly two decades ago the stage appeared.

The actress is now a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade veteran and will perform a song from the show she currently stars in, “Redwood,” titled “Great Escape.”
