Albert the alligator’s owner issues a dark warning after the death of P’Nut the squirrel

The New York man whose pet alligator Albert was seized by state officials is warning animal owners that they could come for you after P’Nut, a squirrel rescuer’s beloved friend, was also just captured — and killed.

“I think there’s a bigger plan behind all of this,” Tony Cavallaro told The Post on Sunday. “They’re going after innocent people to see how far they can get away with us.”

Cavallaro said he was shocked to learn about the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s treatment of P’Nut, a rehabilitated squirrel kept as a pet by New Yorker Mark Longo.

Tony Cavallaro says he lost his beloved alligator Albert in much the same way fellow upstater Mark Longo had to say goodbye to his P’nut the squirrel — all thanks to overzealous state workers. Tony Cavallaro/Facebook

Police stormed Longo’s home in Pine City on Wednesday and seized the animal along with his raccoon Fred. The DEC said it had to kill the wild pets to test them for rabies because they interacted closely with humans.

“It’s just really sad that that squirrel didn’t do anything,” Cavallaro said, adding that he knew all too well how powerless Longo must have felt during the DEC raid.

“I’m so sorry for what they went through. There was nothing they could do,” he said of Longo and his wife.

Cavallaro has been fighting the DEC for almost eight months since Albert was taken from him in March.

The alligator – which Cavallaro had for 34 years and housed in an elaborate pen in his own home – has since been transported to an “adventure park” in Texas.

Cavallaro is now trying to at least have Albert transported to a refuge he trusts.

As for the DEC, Cavallaro harbors nothing but disgust and distrust.

“It’s just a dirty, dirty organization. “I don’t know what they are trying to do to us, but there is no justification,” he said.

The DEC said Albert had to be taken because it was illegal for Cavallaro to detain him – a claim he adamantly refutes, insisting that he tried numerous times to renew Albert’s old license, but the agency refused to do so for years. respond.

Cavallaro called the agency’s treatment of Longo – who said he was treated like “a terrorist” during their five-hour raid – all too familiar, recalling how armed officers tore up his home as they stormed his home for Albert.

Longo had cared for P’Nut for seven years after saving him as a baby when his mother was hit by a car.

He only kept the squirrel because he simply didn’t want to leave once he got healthy – so P’Nut became a quasi-pet, loved not only by Longo, but also by about 3 million people who followed him on social media.

But all that came crashing down on Wednesday when the DEC showed up and took P’Nut and Fred away. Those animals were targeted — and not the others on Longo’s property — because they lived in the house.

Both animals were subsequently killed by the DEC due to the threat of rabies and similar wild animals living with humans, state officials said. An officer claimed that P’Nut also bit their hand during the robbery.
