The Guardians

The Guardians erased another stunning blown save by star closer Emmanuel Clase in the eighth with a pair of home runs from rookie Jhonkensy Noel and David Fry. The latter hit the walk-off winner in 10 innings to lift Cleveland to a 7-5 victory.

In a statistic that shows just how close they have been to turning this streak around, Cleveland put a lot of traffic on board against the Yankees in the ALCS, leaving 27 runners on base through three games. They stranded 11 runners in surviving Game 3.

It was the third postseason walk-off home run in franchise history, joining Tony Peña (ALDS 1995) and Oscar Gonzalez (AL Wild Card 2022).

Noel went 1-for-15 in the postseason and didn’t hit a home run in 76 at-bats before the iconic moment saved the Guardians’ season.

Lost in the chaos was rookie Kyle Manzardo’s first career home run, which gave the Guardians their first lead in the series. It became the kickstart of an instant classic.

Guardians players to watch

Emmanuel Clase’s second save of the postseason is concerning. It’s not that he had two saves in the playoffs, but how they came about: huge momentum, swinging home runs. He will need to get back into shape if Cleveland wants to keep the momentum going.

Brayan Rocchio’s hitting streak lives on, having recorded at least one hit in eight consecutive postseason games. Rocchio is hitting .407 with a home run and two RBI. He owns a 1.041 OPS.

As seen in the regular season, David Fry’s clutch meter is near the top. He scored two huge home runs and seven RBI in the postseason.

The Yankees

The Yankees became the first team in postseason history to trail multiple runs and hit back-to-back home runs when Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton both outpaced Emmanuel Clase in what seemed like a big moment of the series.

Hidden in their two wins, New York was awful with runners in scoring position in the ALCS, going just 3-for-25 (.120). They are hitting 9-for-60 (.150) in the entire postseason. New York has drawn six walks in the series, but has not been able to fully utilize them.

How will the Bronx Bombers respond after an unfathomable turnaround after being bombarded with a historic counterpunch?

The magnified class suddenly shifts to the Yankees, who were down one to a 3-0 lead in the ALCS. New York is looking for their first American League pennant since 2009.

Yankees players to watch

Aaron Judge hit his second home run in two games. But those memories were dampened considerably when the Yankees failed to get the win. The AL MVP leader started the postseason going 2-for-15 in the first five games.

Giancarlo Stanton was second in a 1-2 punch that nearly put Cleveland on life support. He has three home runs and six RBI this postseason. Stanton hit 27 home runs and 72 RBI in the regular season.

Anthony Volpe touts an on-base percentage of .483. He scored at least one goal in five of the seven postseason games.

Tonight’s pitching game

(NY) Luis Gil (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. (CLE) Gavin Williams (0-0, 0.00)

Luis Gil gets the start in what will be an energetic crowd at Progressive Field. Gil, a rookie, went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA and recorded 130 strikeouts in the regular season. He is a prime candidate for AL Rookie of the Year. It is his first postseason start. Gil was challenged by the Guardians in one meeting this season, allowing three runs, six walks and three hits, including a home run to Brayan Rocchio. Gil has allowed 17 starts with one or zero runs.

Both Yankees stud relievers Clay Holmes and Luke Weaver have pitched in all seven games. Weaver comes off the walk-off to Fry.

Gavin Williams, who has a regular season record of 3-10 with a 4.86 ERA, is an unknown. He hasn’t pitched a game since September 22. It is also his postseason debut. Guardians manager Stephen Vogt may dunk him for a few innings before signing him to the best bullpen in baseball.

Reliever Cade Smith threw just 10 pitches in Game 3, striking out Juan Soto, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton in that order. Expect Hunter Gaddis and Tim Herrin to return to action to put on another redemption performance from Clase.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Guardians had just celebrated an unexpected Christmas in October, so it was only fitting that they also got to experience Fryday on Thursday.

David Fry, author of so many clutch hits and comeback moments for Cleveland throughout the regular season and into the playoffs, delivered a two-out walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning, giving the Guardians a 7 -5 win. against the Yankees in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series at Progressive Field.

It was the third walk-off home run in Guardians postseason history, joining Tony Peña in Game 1 of the 1995 AL Division Series against Boston and Oscar Gonzalez in the 2022 AL Wild Card Series clincher against Tampa Bay .

Fry’s home run came an inning after rookie right fielder Jhonkensy Noel blasted a two-out, two-run home run of his own to tie the score in the bottom of the ninth and force extra innings. Great defense from Andrés Giménez and Josh Naylor in the top of the 10th left the score at 5 points apiece.

Bo Naylor led off the inning with a leadoff single to right against former Yankees closer Clay Holmes. He got into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Brayan Rocchio and was on third base after Steven Kwan sent a grounder back to the mound and Holmes inexplicably threw to first base for the second out.

Holmes then worked ahead of Fry in the count, 1-2, before throwing a 96 mph sinker into the strike zone and over the inner part of the plate to the Guardians All-Star. Fry, who entered the game as a pinch-hitter for Kyle Manzardo in the seventh inning, said he “blacked out” after making contact on the field.

“I just told God, ‘Hey man, take this.’ It’s a tough game… you take the at bat,” Fry said. “It’s difficult in such situations to stay true to yourself and just try a normal approach, but luckily tonight was a good one.”
