Guardians vs. Tigers Game 5 preview

After thirteen regular season meetings and one wild rollercoaster of a series so far, it’s one final game to decide who earns a spot in the ALCS.

Cleveland survived a back-and-forth classic 5-4 to stun Comerica Park and send the series to a fifth and final game. The Guardians went on an eleven-game losing streak in postseason elimination games and a twenty-inning scoreless streak.

David Fry delivered a memorable two-run home run in the seventh and a brilliant squeeze bunt in the ninth inning that proved to be the difference, while Jose Ramirez snapped a two-game hitless streak with a home run and a much-needed boost heading home. Guardians manager Stephen Vogt recovered from a rough chess match with Detroit skipper AJ Hinch and held his own with some smart moves.

After botching Game 2, Emmanuel Clase trotted out for a thrilling five-out save. He allowed one run but hunkered down with some patented heat.

As expected, Detroit will send AL Cy Young frontrunner Tarik Skubal on four days’ rest, while the Guardians have not yet revealed their starter for Game 5. Skubal pitched seven innings and struck out eight while allowing three hits in Game 2. He had an 18-4 record with a 2.39 ERA in the regular season.

Skubal is just 4-3 with a 3.11 ERA on four days’ rest. On five days off, he is 9-1 with a 2.07 ERA.
