Alex Ovechkin leaves the game against Utah HC injured after leg-on-leg contact with Jack McBain

Alex Ovechkin was forced to leave Monday’s game against Utah HC with what appeared to be a lower-body injury.

The Capitals lost their captain with 2:30 left in the next third period Jack McBain straight through Washington’s zone and had leg-to-leg contact with Ovechkin. Ovechkin, who had already scored twice in the game, immediately fell to the ice in visible pain.

No penalty was imposed because the contact was considered incidental.

Defenseman Jakob Chychrun and head athletic trainer Jason Serbus accompanied Ovechkin off the ice.

The 39-year-old winger initially remained on the Capitals’ bench, but left for the team’s locker room after taking a brief turn on the ice during a break in the game. The Monumental Sports Network broadcast caught Ovechkin staggering through the tunnel.

Tom Wilson, one of the club’s alternate captains, ensured McBain responded with a fight for the game later in the period.

Ovechkin, the NHL’s leading scorer with 15, also scores a hat trick against the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday night. He is just 26 goals shy of Wayne Gretzky for a share of the league’s all-time goals record.

The ever-durable Russian forward has only missed 59 games in his career, 35 of which were due to injury.

Head coach Spencer Carbery had little news regarding Ovechkin’s postgame. “He is currently being evaluated and we will know more tomorrow,” Carbery said.

Washington has a day off tomorrow as they travel home from their back-to-back games out West. They will practice Wednesday morning and host the Colorado Avalanche Thursday night at Capital One Arena.
