Alexei Popyrin described in detail the “incredible” feeling he had when he defeated Novak Djokovic to reach the fourth round of the US Open.

Popyrin won 6-4 6-4 2-6 6-4 on Friday evening (August 30), sending the reigning champion home in a surprise move.

The defeat marks the first time Djokovic has failed to win a Grand Slam title since 2017. It is also his first elimination from a major tournament since the Australian Open that year.

“It’s incredible because I’ve been to the third round about 15 times in my career, but I’ve never managed to get to the fourth round,” Popyrin said after his victory.

“To be able to compete against the greatest of all time… that’s an amazing feeling.”
