HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – An American Airlines flight apparently came dangerously close to the Koolau Mountains earlier this week.

Airplane tracker FlightAware shows that Flight 298 took off from Honolulu to Los Angeles just after 12:30 pm on Wednesday

The flight path was straight, but aviation experts said the route had to make a sharp right turn after takeoff.

Audio can be heard of an air traffic controller instructing the pilot to avoid the mountains: “Number 298 turn right, accelerate your climb through the terrain, then turn right through 120.”

‘Speed ​​up your climb’ is a technical way of saying hurry up and gain altitude.

The flight ultimately arrived in Los Angeles without incident seven hours later.
