Andy Dalton takes over as starter

By the time the players entered the locker room on Monday afternoon, they had had some time to digest the change and Canales’ challenge to “provide the same support for Andy as we go into this week. That the boys support him and go into it with that kind of energy every day.”

Safety Nick Scott, who has been in the league since 2019 and is now on his third team, has experienced turnovers before. The Rams went to the playoffs three times while Scott was in Los Angeles and won a Super Bowl. But they followed that victory with a 5-12 season. As such, Scott — like many in the locker room — is familiar with what happens when things go south.

“There are changes, especially when you go through adversity,” Scott said. “Any position group, any player, regardless of their role, can be in that position.”

It was an echo of what Canales had said earlier, which was that it’s his job to evaluate every position and “that includes the quarterback position, so that’s full.”

But as Scott went on to explain, “there’s turnover. Guys get hired, guys get fired, guys get replaced, all that kind of stuff.

“We see it everywhere we go, we’ve seen it for a number of years. So, you know, the mentality of the guys in this group is: come on Wednesday, ready to work, ready to do our job first and then trust the coaches to make the decisions that we need to make to put us in a position to be successful on Sunday.”

And for now, the decision is to have Dalton play as the starting quarterback.
