Andy Reid on Patrick Mahomes: A lot of it’s my responsibility to get him into a rhythm earlier

After Sunday’s win over the Falcons, quarterback Patrick Mahomes told reporters he feels like he didn’t play well.

The quarterback indicated that he is missing opportunities and needs to get back to his basic skills.

Head coach Andy Reid was asked about these comments during his press conference on Monday and said there are things he can do as an offensive playmaker to put Mahomes in a better position for success.

“He’s a phenomenal player,” Reid said. “And I thought he kind of got into a rhythm in the second half. A lot of that is my responsibility to get him into that rhythm earlier. And so we go back and talk through all that and get it taken care of.

“But I thought he did a really good job in the second half — he had some great throws. That throw to (Travis) Kelce on the deep cross and the throw to Rashee (Rice) — same route, two different throws, and he was absolutely good there. Either way, he finished well.”

The quarterback noted that footwork is one area he can improve on, but Reid indicated that Mahomes is also adept in that area.

“I think it’s important to get him in a rhythm,” Reid said. “That includes all those things — the footwork, the knee bend, his drop, everything else. And the more we secure things up front, it helps. So he was coming off a game where he had to get the ball out quick last week with the pressure on him. But I thought the offensive line did a good job here. And I think Pat will see that and that helps the situation as well.”

Mahomes has completed 69.6 percent of his passes for 659 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions through three games. His average of 219.7 yards is a far cry from his 261.4 yards average in 2023.
