Angelo Ogbonna signs for Watford

With around a week to go until the transfer window, Watford could be on the verge of signing a player who has been a fantastic performer for West Ham over the past nine years.

Angelo Ogbonna is now 36 years old and is likely approaching the end of a career that began at Torino, was loaned to Crotone, had a brief stint at Juventus and finally joined the Hammers, where he cemented his legend.

Although not always in the news in East London, the Italian was a reliable and solid player for the Hammers and was part of David Moyes’ successful Europa Conference League-winning team.

The player is now a free agent and the Watford Observer reports that he will move to Vicarage Road before the transfer deadline.

The Hornets have made a good start to the 2024/25 Championship season, with two wins from two games.

Although they are currently third in the table, they are actually tied for first place with Burnley and Sunderland, both of whom have a better goal difference.

Watford head coach Tom Cleverly, at 36, is a year younger than Ogbonna and will be pleased to have such an experienced player to bolster his team’s defence as Watford look to make a real difference in the English second tier this season.

If he remains injury-free for the majority of the season, it is clear that the Italian will be a huge asset to the club.

West Ham are set to go in a different direction this season, more than ever before, after Tim Steidten won the battle for David Moyes’ will.

Considering his transfer balance for the club this season, one can’t really argue that letting Ogbonna leave wasn’t the best decision for all involved.
