Anger as the price of a major streaming service rises by 25%: ‘Again? Can we rest for five minutes in between?’

Disney’s price increases for its streaming plans in America hit today – just a year after the last increase.

The increases affect Disney+, Hulu and ESPN – the entertainment giant’s three streaming services.

As of today, Disney+ with ads has increased from $7.99 to $9.99 per month, which represents a 25 percent increase. The ad-free version now costs $15.99, up from $2.

At Hulu, the ad-supported plan has increased by $2 to $9.99, while the ad-free option has increased by $1 to $18.99.

Experts say the increases are intended to lure customers to The Disney Bundle, which includes both Disney+ and Hulu with ads for $10.99, after a $1 increase.

That works out to just a dollar more than if you got both services separately.

ESPN+ with ads also increases $1 to $11.99.

Executives at major streaming platforms such as Disney, Netflix and Peacock believe they can boost profits through higher ad sales.

Disney’s price increases were announced in August. Soon after, streaming fans took to social media claiming they were canceling their subscriptions as they were fed up with price increases.

“I just unsubscribed, f@@k this greedy platform,” one user wrote in a Reddit thread.

Someone replied: ‘Same, that’s too much of a price increase and honestly the content isn’t worth it.’

In another thread, someone else wrote: “AGAIN? Can we rest for five minutes, Disney? ‘

Meanwhile, Disney Plus last month announced details of how it will stop ‘freeloaders’ from sharing their accounts.

The company blocks people from different homes from using the same account. It can do this by monitoring which WiFi they use.

Anyone who wants to add an ‘additional member’ will have to pay $6.99 per month for the ad-supported plan and $9.99 for the ad-free version.

Disney’s crackdown is similar to what Netflix did in 2023 — allowing account holders to add additional members for a fee. But to make it more affordable, the price for additional people is lower than for a completely new subscription.

Disney is the latest to raise prices as TV streamers look to cash in on businesses that have lost money so far.

Streaming services have invested heavily in big budget shows while offering cheap subscriptions, but investors now want returns.

Peacock increased prices by 33 percent from July 19. The monthly rate for the standard service – confusingly called “Premium” – rose by $2 to $7.99, and the annual rate went up by $20 to $79.99.

In late June, Paramount+ Essential announced a $2 increase to $7.99 for new customers, also a 33 percent increase. Current customers keep their rates.

Earlier in June, Warner Bros. Discovery for the second time this year the ad-free Max subscription price.

Experts suggest these increases are intended to encourage subscriptions to The Disney Bundle, which offers both Disney+ and Hulu ads for $10.99 after a $1 increase. The Bear is once again a big hit on both services
