Anna Kendrick remembers microdosing mushrooms with Brittany Snow

Anna Kendrick looks back on a failed Halloween trip.

Appears on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday, October 23 Pitch Perfect star reflected on a 2023 Halloween party with Brittany Snow, where the pair decided to try mushroom microdosing.

But Kendrick, 39, got more than she bargained for. “We went to a party and someone asked if I wanted to microdose mushrooms. And that’s something people do. And I was like, ‘Yeah, you know, I’m fun.’ And that’s how you know you’re fun when you have to say it to a crowd,” Kendrick joked.

The actress then explained what she took, describing it as a “little chocolate bar” where “everyone takes a square,” noting that she ended up chopping her already small dose in half.

“And on that night I learned that chocolate is not a great delivery system for mushrooms because sometimes it doesn’t mix well and sometimes there can be a little bite that doesn’t have a microdose but a true macrodose,” she said. “So I’m on this party and it’s the first time I’ve tried microdosing and I get so high. And I start saying, ‘Oh no, I’m so high. Oh God, I’m so high.’ And I just can’t help but say it.”

Luckily, Snow, 38, had her co-star’s back. As Kendrick explained, her “hero friend” realized she was “stumbling” and decided to have “another bunch of mushrooms.”

“So then the two of us are sitting in the corner of this party, staring at each other, grinning like the Joker while tears flow. But we felt great,” Kendrick said.

“And I just say, ‘You’re so beautiful,’ ‘No, you’re so beautiful,’ ‘You’re so talented,’ ‘No, you’re so talented.’ And she had these little gems on her face for the party and it blended in with the LA skyline,” she added. “I thought, ‘You’re a creative genius,’ and I told her to remake the movie Chinatown. So those were my big mushroom revelations.”

Kendrick, who appeared on Jacket to promote her directorial debut Woman of the Hour – now streaming on Netflix – later joked that her story was for “entertainment purposes” only after host Stephen Colbert asked her if microdosing is legal.

“Learn from my mistakes, kids,” she added. “Don’t do drugs.”

Earlier this month, Kendrick spoke with PEOPLE about her enduring friendships with her colleague Pitch Perfect stars, saying it’s “truly amazing how they’ve remained a part of my life.”

“Honestly, I think I can have a hard shell, and the fact that I was around these women making films for ten years, I’m very grateful that they were around just enough to wear me out, I think,” says Kendrick of the 2012 hit and its two sequels – which also featured Rebel Wilson, Anna Camp, Ester Dean, Alexis Knapp, Hana Mae Lee, Shelley Regner and Kelley Jakle.

“They are some of the most rewarding relationships of my life, so I’m honestly surprised they’ve stuck around in my life. I was really lucky,” she added.

Kendrick isn’t the first celebrity to share or joke about his microdosing experience. During a press conference for the 2024 NHL All-Star Game in February, Michael Bublé joked with reporters that he microdose on mushrooms on the way to Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena for the event’s pilot.

“My friend told me this was just a microdose of mushrooms and he lied,” Bublé said at the time. “So, I’ll be honest, I thought I was in Blades of glory Most of the time I was there until it kind of settled down and then I realized, ‘Holy s…, I’m at the NHL All-Star Game.’ ”

The Grammy winner was later asked by a reporter if he was actually “on shrooms while he was on stage,” and he clarified that it was a joke. ‘Of course not! I’m sitting here at the table. I do have a problem with bread,” he said.
