Antonio Pierce: I would tell Tua Tagovailoa to retire

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said during his Friday press conference that he did not want to discuss Tua Tagovailoa’s future in the game after the quarterback suffered another concussion on Thursday night.

But another team’s head coach, and former player, was asked about Tagovailoa and gave a very different answer.

“I’ll be honest, I would tell him to retire,” Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce said at his Friday press conference. “It’s not worth it. It’s not worth it. I played the game, but I’ve never seen anything like what happened to him three times. It’s scary. You see the faces on the field. You see the sense of urgency to help Tua.

“I just think at some point he’s going to live longer than he’s going to play football. Take care of your family.”

Tagovailoa, 26, was ejected from the game in the third quarter on Thursday after dropping his shoulder and hitting safety Damar Hamlin during a scramble on fourth down.

Pierce is not Tagovailoa’s head coach. But because he is a former player, Pierce’s comments about Tagovailoa are significant.
