AP top 25 teams move up and down in Week 9

As we pick up the pieces from an active slate of college football games this weekend, let’s try to predict which top 25 teams will move up and down the Week 9 rankings.

Results in the SEC will have the most impact on this week’s top 25 rankings, following a top-15 battle at Rocky Top and a top-5 battle at the Forty Acres, which should see voters reshuffle which teams belong where , around a number of subsequent spots at the top of the poll.

And in the Big Ten, one team is rising in the rankings after a signature win at home, while college football’s defending champions are slumping after a second straight loss.

What will AP voters think of all the changes?

SI reveals our predictions for which teams will make the biggest moves up and down the AP top 25 rankings as we look ahead to Week 9 action.

Last week’s ranking: No. 5

Desperate to avoid what would have been a costly second loss, the Bulldogs played as if their backs were against the wall, turning in an elite defensive performance in a win over No. 1 Texas.

Georgia’s defense generated seven sacks and forced four takeaways that the offense was able to convert into 17 points, and completely kept the Longhorns off the scoreboard in the first half.

Is that enough to vault to the No. 1 spot in this week’s rankings?

That’s possible, since almost all of last week’s first-place votes are up for grabs, and beating the No. 1 team in the country could be considered enough for the No. 5 team to make that jump.

But voters will likely reward Oregon’s undefeated record and remember Georgia’s loss earlier this year to an Alabama team that is now at two losses.

Last week’s ranking: No. 1

It’s time to take a closer look at the Longhorns’ offense, which was so out of place under Georgia pressure that Steve Sarkisian briefly traded Quinn Ewers for Arch Manning in the first half.

But it was Ewers who got back into the game and led two crucial touchdown drives in the third quarter to make it an 8-point game and put the Bulldogs on the back foot for a while.

Still, this was the Longhorns’ biggest test yet in the SEC and the loss is a reminder that winning consistently in this league will be a tall order.

Texas has now lost its last five home games against opponents in the top five of the rankings, and while there is still a clear path to the playoffs, its resume has taken a hit as wins against Michigan and Oklahoma no longer look very impressive. look.

A drop from No. 1 is a given, but we still expect the Longhorns to remain in the top five of this week’s rankings as voters will view them as the best one-loss team in the country.

Last week’s ranking: No. 11

There was an element of surprise and relief that added to the joy when the Vols upset the Crimson Tide at Neyland two years ago, but this time it almost felt expected.

And as the Big Orange faithful lit their victory cigars after a 24-17 victory over Alabama in the Third Saturday of October game, Tennessee took a big step closer to College Football Playoff contention.

That was despite a sluggish early offense that again raises legitimate questions about quarterback Nico Iamaleava’s trajectory.

But in the meantime, the Vols’ solid rushing attack and physical defensive front have carried this team to a 6-1 record and an inside track in the playoff hunt.

With that, we should see Tennessee rise into the top 10 of this week’s rankings at the expense of Alabama heading into an open week, and with a date at Georgia the only major obstacle left on the schedule.

Last week’s ranking: No. 7

Alabama fans probably expected a few bumps in the road as Kalen DeBoer found his way, but a loss to Vanderbilt, a close loss to South Carolina and a loss to Tennessee put the Tide’s mid-October playoff hopes in jeopardy. an almost unthinkable situation. thought back to the preseason.

It’s the first time since 2007 that Alabama has lost two games before November and the first season since 1984 that the program has seen losses to both Vanderbilt and Tennessee as it finds itself in the grip of an identity crisis stemming from the historically dominant Nick Saban years . .

That brilliant offense that looked unstoppable against Georgia has since lost that momentum, going three-and-out on three of the last four possessions against the Vols, with the fourth being an interception by Jalen Milroe.

AP top 25 voters will want to punish the Tide, who should at least fall into the top 15, while other lower-ranked teams win this weekend.

Last week’s ranking: No. 16

This isn’t just any college basketball this season, as first-year head coach Curt Cignetti has revitalized this offense and put the Hoosiers straight into contention for the College Football Playoffs.

Facing Nebraska’s tough defense would be the first real test, and Indiana passed it with flying colors, moving to 7-0 for the second time ever after defeating the Cornhuskers in a rout of 56-7.

Indiana has outscored opponents 80-0 in the first quarter through seven games and has outscored opponents 94-17 in the fourth quarter, including 14-0 against Nebraska.

IU has won its first four Big Ten games by an average of nearly four touchdowns each, is second nationally in total point differential against Power Four opponents this season, and is 1 of 2 teams to score at some point this season should still be behind in any match.

How realistic are the Hoosiers’ playoff hopes? They should be favored in four of their final five games (Washington, Michigan State, Michigan and Purdue), with the Ohio State date being the exception.

Last week’s ranking: No. 24

Don’t underestimate Michigan’s dismal passing attack. It’s really terrible.

The offense runs through three quarterbacks and has six passing touchdowns, eight interceptions and three fumbles this season.

And after a 21-7 loss at Illinois, the Wolverines have suffered three losses before the start of November for the first time since the 2014 season, the year before Jim Harbaugh came on board as head coach.

With his departure, it looks more and more every week that the program he left behind is returning to its pre-Harbaugh level in record time. This is the week that Michigan falls out of the rankings.

– We predict Oregon will be the No. 1 team in the country this week, behind No. 2, with voters more likely to reward the Ducks’ undefeated record than Georgia’s lone loss.

-No. 23 Army moved up the rankings last week and should rise again after improving to 7-0 with an impressive win against East Carolina, which once again showcased its dazzling talent in the backfield, and the Black Knights are the other team so far in college football this season.

– The same goes for Navy after it punched Charlotte in the mouth in a suffocating defensive effort that included two interceptions returned for touchdowns.

– BYU had some defensive issues, but Jake Retzlaff scored a game-winning touchdown for the Cardiac Cougars to beat Oklahoma State and remain perfect in the Big 12.

-Oklahoma held on to a league-leading 36 votes last week but should lose them all after a shocking performance against South Carolina in which the offense allowed the opposing team to score touchdowns off turnovers on consecutive possessions and allow 9 sacks. This team is lost.
