Arizona Cardinals are embarrassed by loss against Washington Commanders

play

Look back to our live updates from the match, which was played at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

The Arizona Cardinals fell to 1-3 on the season with a 42-14 loss to the Washington Commanders.

The Cardinals scored on their opening possession but struggled the rest of the way.

Quarterback Kyler Murray finished 16-for-22 for 142 yards and a touchdown. He was sacked four times for a loss of 27 yards.

His Commander counterpart, Jayden Daniels, went 26-of-30 for 233 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also had eight carries for 47 yards and another touchdown.

James Conner led Arizona with 18 carries for 104 yards and a touchdown. Marvin Harrison Jr. had five catches for 45 yards and a touchdown.

The Cardinals will take on the San Francisco 49ers in NFL Week 5 on October 6.

Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant wore a Commanders jersey as he celebrated his birthday at State Farm Stadium on Sunday.

With KD at the game were Magic Johnson, Josh Harris, Mark Ein, Mitchell Rales, Eric Holoman, Kevin Durant, Vernon Dixon and Rich Kleiman.

The Commanders needed just 2:41 to move the ball 76 yards over eight plays for their fifth touchdown of the game.

Jeremy McNichols carried the ball seven yards for the touchdown. He has eight carries for 68 yards and two touchdowns. Brian Robinson Jr. leads Washington with 21 carries for 101 yards and a touchdown.

QB Jayden Daniels has eight carries for 47 yards and a touchdown. He goes 26-of-30, good for 233 yards and another touchdown.

Score: Commanders 42, Cardinals 14 (4:30 Q4)

Kyler Murray completed a deep pass to Michael Wilson that was fumbled but ruled by contact.

The commanders disputed the call on the field. After review, the call was quashed. Washington received the ball at its own 23.

Jayden Daniels completed a 10-yard pass to Terry McLaurin and a two-point conversion was successful as the Commanders essentially put the Cardinals away.

Arizona is down three touchdowns with 8:25 to play.

Daniels is 25-for-28 passing for 206 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He wasn’t fired. He has completed passes to nine different players.

Score: Commanders 35, Cardinals 14 (8:25 Q4)

The Cardinals converted on fourth-and-12 from their own 49 – and they needed to.

Trailing by 20 and nothing happening on offense, the Cardinals took another gamble, just like they did with their first touchdown. The conversion was the spark they needed.

Arizona capped the 74-yard drive with a touchdown – their first since the game’s first possession when they scored on a fourth down play.

James Conner carried the ball six yards for the touchdown.

Score: Commanders 27, Cardinals 14 (0:11 Q3)

A particularly bad stretch in the third quarter had Cardinals fans booing their team.

On possession, the Cardinals had a run of 11 yards and a completion of 10 yards, called back after holding penalties. After Kyler Murray was sacked, the Cardinals faced a third-and-34 from their own six.

On third down, Emari Demercado carried the ball for eight yards, giving punter Blake Gillikin some room to work. He booted the ball 62 yards, but that was after the fans had already started booing.

Score: Commanders 24, Cardinals 7 (11:21 Q3)

Aided by a 47-yard pass interference penalty, the Commanders scored 1 minute, 8 seconds into the second half.

Daniels ran for the 9-yard touchdown set up by the penalty, putting the ball at the Cardinals 9.

The Commanders have now scored 24 unanswered points.

Score: Commanders 24, Cardinals 7 (13:52 Q3)

The Arizona Cardinals scored the first points of the game, but since then almost everything has gone the Commanders’ way.

QB Kyler Murray went 3-for-3 on that first drive, but he’s just 6-for-10 since then. He was sacked twice for thirteen yards. The Cardinals are just 1-for-6 on third down and 1-for-2 on fourth down.

By the end of the first half, Arizona had the ball and appeared to at least get a field goal. The Cardinals didn’t just turn the ball over on downs, though, when they failed to convert on fourth-and-1. Murray was fired for a loss of 7.

Those yards helped the Commanders position themselves for a field goal.

Washington QB Jayden Daniels is 11-for-13 for 96 yards with an interception.

The Commanders are 5-for-6 on third-down conversion attempts. They outscored the Cardinals 220 to 122.

Score: Commanders 17, Cardinals 7 (rest)

Arizona Wildcats men’s basketball coach Tommy Lloyd attended Sunday’s Arizona Cardinals game.

Garrett Williams intercepted Washington QB Jayden Daniels’ pass intended for Terry McLaurin.

At the time, the Commanders were driving on the Cardinals side of the 50. Williams jumped to grab the ball at the 18.

The turnover was Washington’s first this season.

Nothing came of the possession for the Cardinals as they went 3-and-out.

Score: Commanders 14, Cardinals 7 (4:35 Q2)

Jeremy McNichols blasted his way for a touchdown, a seemingly strange description for a 27-yard run. But that was it when McNichols shook off would-be tacklers.

It was his second carry of the game.

The Commanders covered 93 yards in 13 plays to take the lead.

Score: Commanders 14, Cardinals 7 (10:18 Q2)

Cardinals QB Kyler Murray is 5-for-7 for 36 yards and a touchdown. He led the Cardinals on a touchdown drive on the first possession.

James Conner has seven carries for 44 yards – more than doubling his output for the entire game against the Lions last week.

Marvin Harrison Jr. has three catches for 21 yards and a touchdown.

Washington QB Jayden Daniels is 5-for-5 for 43 yards. Brian Robinson Jr. has seven carries for 45 yards.

As quickly as the Cardinals scored, the commanders responded.

Washington used nine plays to cover 70 yards. The drive was capped by a 6-yard run by Brian Robinson Jr.

Score: Cardinals 7, Commanders 7

Four inches from the Washington 2, the Cardinals made the risky decision to throw the ball in the air. Another coach may have kicked the field goal or given the ball away.

The play calling paid off when Kyler Murray sent a two-yard pass to Marvin Harrison Jr. completed for a touchdown. The point after that was good.

The drive started on a 39-yard return by DJ Dallas to start the game. The Cardinals used nine plays to cover 55 yards.

Score: Cardinals 7, Commanders 0 (9:54 Q1)

The Cardinals offense gets the first chance to strike.

Washington will kick off to start the game.

The contest is on Sunday, September 29 at 1:05 PM MST, 4:05 PM ET.
