Arkansas football vs Tennessee: Hogs stun volunteers

FAYETTEVILLE – Two years of plodding late-game performances without a signature win finally reached the breaking point for Arkansas football on Saturday night.

The Razorbacks (4-2, 2-1 SEC) erased a two-score deficit in the second half, edging past No. 4 Tennessee 19-14 for their first home victory over a top-five team since 1999.

Malachi Singleton, who took over for Taylen Green after the starting quarterback left with an injury early in the fourth quarter, scored the winning touchdown on an 11-yard run with 1:17 remaining.

It was Arkansas’ defense that won the game. Tennessee entered the night leading the nation in scoring offense and ranked third in yards per game, but the Volunteers (4-1, 1-1) couldn’t find any success outside of two touchdown drives to keep it third quarter to start. They only managed 332 yards of total offense.

Fourth quarter

  • It’s incredible. With their backup quarterback, the Hogs march 59 yards in four plays and take the lead with 1:17 left. Beautiful play-calling by Bobby Petrino on the drive. However, the two-point attempt was off, so Arkansas leads 19-14.

  • This was a strange ride. Arkansas reached Tennessee’s two-yard line, but Taylen Green took a big hit on a long pass and had to leave the game. He wanted to come back, but the Hogs kept Malachi Singleton on the field and they couldn’t find the end zone. Matthew Shipley is good from 22 yards out and the Tennessee lead is 14-13 with 12:08 to go.

Third quarter

  • The Hogs respond with a crucial scoring drive to cut the deficit to 14-10 with 4:38 left in the third quarter. Really nice passing drive from Taylen Green, and Jackson capped it off with his 10th touchdown of the season.
  • Two personal foul penalties on the Arkansas defense made life easy for Tennessee on that drive, and the Volunteers punched it in after another short run from Sampson. Tennessee’s offense found the Hogs’ defense after halftime and it’s 14-3 with 8:19 left in the third quarter.
  • Tennessee scores on the first drive of the second half, and Sampson played a key role with three carries for 60 yards in the series. Arkansas played so well in the first half, but that’s all washed away because Tennessee is now in front.

Second quarter

  • Kyle Ramsey is no good from 44 yards out and the Arkansas lead remains 3-0. The Hogs defeated Tennessee 223-29. Isaac TeSlaa was wide open for an easy touchdown on third down, but Taylen Green never looked his way.
  • On fourth down from the Tennessee 20, Sam Pittman opts to go for it and the Hogs fall short. Taylen Green took off with all his receivers covered, but fell just short of the line-to-gain. The sequence is particularly brutal, as Isaiah Sategna dropped a touchdown three plays earlier. Arkansas has defeated Tennessee 192-34, but the score is only 3-0.
  • Tennessee managed to enter Arkansas territory, but the Hogs defense was again taken off the field and forced a Volunteers punt. Tennessee’s offense averaged 54 points per game but was scoreless early in the second quarter. Arkansas takes over at its own six-yard line.

First quarter

  • The Hogs faced fourth-and-1 inside Tennessee territory, and as Taylen Green found Var’keyes Gumms, the tight end made the catch with his knee down and the ball just short of the first-down line. The quarter ends with Arkansas leading 3-0. Tennessee’s offense only had the ball for 2:20 in the opening period.
  • Impressive opening drive for the Hogs, taking nearly 10 minutes on 16 plays, but they have to settle for a field goal after a false start penalty when they had second-and-goal from the Tennessee 1-yard line. It’s 3-0 Arkansas, and this is the first time Tennessee has trailed all season.

Arkansas vs. Tennessee Prediction

Tennessee 34, Arkansas 20: It’s hard to imagine Arkansas keeping up with the Volunteers’ offense. If Arkansas can run the football successfully and give Taylen Green enough time, there will be an outside opportunity. Unfortunately, the Hogs haven’t proven they can do both against quality opponents.
