Armed man arrested outside SoCal Trump rally – NBC4 Washington

A Las Vegas man was arrested Saturday for illegal possession of a firearm near Donald Trump’s rally in Coachella, California, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said.

Law enforcement officials said officers assigned to the former president’s rally contacted a driver in an SUV about a quarter-mile from the rally event location. There, officials determined that the man was illegally in possession of a gun. The suspect also had a shotgun and a high-capacity magazine.

That man, later identified as 49-year-old Vem Miller, was taken into custody by local police on suspicion of possessing illegal firearms.

“This incident did not impact the safety of former President Trump or event attendees,” the sheriff’s department said.

No injuries or shots were reported in connection with the incident.

“The United States Secret Service is aware of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office arrest Saturday,” Secret Service spokeswoman Soraya Sutherlin said. “The incident had no impact on protective operations. The Secret Service extends its gratitude to the deputies and community partners who helped secure last night’s events.”

Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco later said at a news conference that any further charges would come from the federal government.

The arrest comes after two foiled assassination attempts on the former president. In July, shots were fired at a rally for Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, killing one spectator. In September, a man was arrested after he allegedly planned to kill the presidential candidate while at his golf course in Florida.

Acting U.S. Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe on Friday detailed the findings of the agency’s investigation into the July 13 attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania.
