Aston Villa’s ‘absolutely disgusting’ antics literally ‘smother’ Arsenal before match, sending fans into a frenzy

ASTON VILLA have been accused of “literally smothering” Arsenal ahead of their match at Villa Park.

Mikel Arteta’s Gunners visited the Midlands club as Unai Emery’s side played their first home game of the season.

Aston Villa showed off their new player tunnel, leading fans to suspect they were doing so because their opponents were Arsenal.

Ahead of the match, Villa showed off a new addition to their players’ tunnel: the Champions League trophy they won in 1982.

In a video shared on social media, the trophy was seen in a display case in the middle of the players’ tunnel, in front of the entrance to the pitch.

The trophy marks the club’s return to the Champions League this season after finishing fourth last season, and their first appearance in Europe’s top club competition since 1983.

However, fans online were convinced the display was a subtle dig at visiting Arsenal, who have never won the competition.

One fan said: “I swear the league is trying to mock Arsenal. Aston Villa have the Champions League trophy on display. Absolutely disgusting,” followed by some laughing emojis.

A second said: “Aston Villa literally smothered Arsenal with a Champions League trophy. Could never be my club.”

A third added: “Aston Villa display their Champions League trophy so Arsenal can see what it looks like. Trolling on another level.”

Another said: “I’m doing this before an Arsenal game,” followed by a laughing emoji.

A fifth said: “We show what Arsenal can’t do.”

The aim of the match, however, was to disrupt Arsenal, but failed, with the visitors winning 2-0 thanks to goals from Leandro Trossard and Thomas Partey.

Three reasons why Arsenal’s new signing Riccardo Calafiori is a huge improvement

Arsenal reached the Champions League final in 2006, but lost in controversial fashion to Barcelona.

Last season they returned to the competition after an absence since 2017.

They reached the quarter-finals, but were defeated by Bayern Munich.

Villa’s return coincides with the introduction of a new format for the Champions League, which will see teams play eight matches in a common competition format rather than six matches across four team groups.

On Thursday the draw will take place to determine who they will play the competition matches against.

New Champions League format

Each club plays eight matches against ranked opponents in the opening phase. This system is designed to have teams play against opponents of approximately equal difficulty.

The top eight teams in the ‘final’ table automatically progress to the last 16, where they are joined by the eight play-off winners of the matches between the teams ranked ninth to 24th in the table.

Although only eight matches will be played in the opening phase, the European matches will be spread over 10 midweek slots.

The new format of the Champions League also brings with it two additional qualifying places.

They are awarded to the countries that top the ‘country coefficient’ list each season.
