ASU Football vs Mississippi State Live Scores Updates, News, Analysis

The Arizona State American football team continues its 2024 schedule with a game against Mississippi State on Saturday, September 7.

Follow our live updates from the game, which will be played at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe, Arizona, for the latest scores, news, notes and analysis from the Week 2 non-conference college football matchup between the Big 12 Sun Devils and the SEC Bulldogs.

Both teams are 1-0, with ASU leading Mississippi State 27-3 at halftime.

This is the first meeting between the two college football programs, as ASU seeks its first-ever win over an SEC program.

Ian Hershey shot a 47-yard field goal in the first half. He has now added a 46-yard field goal to start the second half and give ASU a 30-3 lead over Mississippi State.

ASU’s first drive of the second half was impressive, counting 8:27 off the clock and racking up 46 yards on 14 plays.

We’ve previously spoken highly of Cam Skattebo (who now has 21 carries for 166 yards in this game), but ASU QB Sam Leavitt deserves some praise as well.

He has nine carries for 64 yards and two rushing touchdowns. He hasn’t been as effective passing (he’s 7-for-14 for 62 yards), but the Sun Devils haven’t needed his arm with the ground game putting up such impressive numbers.

ASU must be very pleased with the way Leavitt is playing early in the season (and the way the entire team is playing, for that matter).

Point: ASU 30, Mississippi State 3 (6:33 remaining in third quarter)

The ASU Sun Devils have never defeated an SEC opponent.

They are 30 minutes away from changing that.

Thanks to impressive offense and strong defense, ASU built a 27-3 lead over Mississippi State at halftime.

ASU ran for 208 yards on 28 carries in this game. MSU ran for -13 yards on 14 attempts.

That’s a big contrast to the team from Starkville.

Arizona State has 262 total yards, compared to Mississippi State’s 82.

The Sun Devils hold a 19:11 to 10:49 lead in possession and have scored a touchdown on defense for the second straight game (they had two touchdowns in the season opener).

Arizona State couldn’t have asked for a better start to its six-quarter season.

Point: ASU football 27, Mississippi State 3 (halftime)

ASU QB Sam Leavitt ran the ball in from 1 yard out to give ASU a 27-3 lead late in the first half against Mississippi State. It was his second rushing TD of the game.

Let’s take a moment to remember ASU’s Cam Skattebo.

The running back has a career-high 137 yards on 15 carries in the first half, his fourth 100-yard rushing game. And there’s still one half to go at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe.

During this most recent ASU drive, Skattebo had runs of 16, 16, 10 and 13 yards.

Skattebo also makes his mark as a receiver, with two receptions for 29 yards.

As a team, ASU has 28 carries for 208 yards. Those numbers are going to help you win football games. Players like Cam Skattebo are going to help too.

There is still a lot to play for, but ASU has put themselves in a position to win this game with their attacking prowess in the first half.

Point: Arizona State 27, Mississippi State 3 (:34 remaining in second quarter)

ASU’s defense stopped Mississippi State on a 4th & 1 at the ASU 31-yard line, with the Bulldogs completely squandering it on downs after an 8-play, 43-yard drive.

The Sun Devils held Mississippi State to 90 total yards in this game. Mississippi State had 450 total yards in last week’s 56-7 win over Eastern Kentucky.

ASU’s defense continues to excel this season and set the tone for the Sun Devils, getting a great play recently, scoring a touchdown on a fumble by Mississippi State QB Blake Shapen.

Shapen fouled when Clayton Smith tackled him. CJ Fite picked up the foul and was able to stretch his arms across the end zone as he fell out of bounds, scoring the touchdown for the Sun Devils.

ASU’s defense has now scored three times in its two games this season. It had an interception return for a touchdown and a fumble recovery for a touchdown in last week’s 48-7 win over Wyoming.

Talk about setting the tone for your team.

Point: ASU 20, Mississippi State 3 (8:23 remaining in second quarter)

ASU’s third drive of the game failed, but Ian Hershey salvaged some points for the Sun Devils by kicking a 47-yard field goal.

It’s his whole career.

Sam Leavitt couldn’t connect on a long pass to Jake Smith on the previous play. He’s 5-of-11 in the game for 54 yards, but hasn’t had to do much with his arm.

Leavitt has run for 54 yards on five carries and Arizona State as a team has run for 140 yards on 18 carries, led by Cam Skattebo with nine carries for 80 yards.

Point: ASU Sun Devils 13, Mississippi State Bulldogs 3 (9:33 left in 2nd quarter)

The Bulldogs would have preferred a touchdown, but Mississippi State just managed to score with a 32-yard field goal by Kyle Ferrie, capping a 12-play, 71-yard drive.

After two 3-and-outs, Mississippi State’s offense desperately needed to get something going and it did, although the drive stalled deep in ASU territory.

Blake Shapen is now 5-of-9 for 68 yards in the game for the Bulldogs. Mississippi State still hasn’t been able to do much on the ground, with just five total yards rushing.

But it did show up on the scoreboard.

Point: Arizona State football 10, Mississippi State 3 (13:16 remaining in second quarter)

The Sun Devils extended their lead over Mississippi State to 10-0.

Ian Hershey scored a 27-yard field goal to end a 12-play, 60-yard drive for ASU football.

After each team’s first two possessions, ASU has 10 first downs, compared to zero for Mississippi State.

The Sun Devils have 149 yards. The Bulldogs have two.

Arizona State has 107 rushing yards, while Mississippi State has -4.

How long did Mississippi State have possession? 2:32. ASU? 10:28.

Point: ASU football 10, Mississippi State 0 (2:00 left in 1st quarter)

The Sun Devils defense shined against Wyoming in Week 1, allowing only a late touchdown in a 48-7 victory.

The game didn’t calm down at the start of Saturday night’s Week 2 game against Mississippi State.

Arizona State just forced Mississippi State into its second 3-and-out early in the game at Mountain America Stadium.

The Bulldogs gained just two yards on their first two attacks.

Not a bad start for ASU.

The ASU football team got off to a strong start in last week’s win over Wyoming.

The same thing happened Saturday night at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe.

The Sun Devils forced Mississippi State into a 3-and-out on the Bulldogs’ opening drive, then marched 79 yards down the field in 10 plays and 4:11 to take a 7-0 lead on a 17-yard run by QB Sam Leavitt.

That’s enough.

Leavitt had two carries for 32 yards on the drive, including the TD run. Cam Skattebo had three carries for 24 yards.

Point: Arizona State 7, Mississippi State 0 (9:31 to go in 1st quarter)
