At least 10 skulls, one linked to a missing person, found in New Mexico

At least ten human skulls have been found at a home in Jal, NM, with one possibly linked to a woman who has been missing since 2019.

The Lea County Sheriff’s Office was first alerted on Nov. 5 after a department investigator received information that a Jal resident had had a “disturbing encounter” with a person they had given a ride to.

The passenger, who has since been identified as 28-year-old Cecil Villanueva, reportedly “carried two bags” and then “made alarming statements and threw objects from the vehicle, some of which appeared to be human bones,” according to a report press. release shared on the department’s Facebook account on Tuesday, November 12.

Officers searched the area where the driver reported the incident and found “bone fragments” near a supermarket. A pathologist determined the remains were human.

Investigators say Villanueva’s home on South 4th Street was “associated with rumors of human remains” and returned to the property on Nov. 6 with a search warrant, where “additional bone fragments, including portions of a skull and jawbone” were found .

The discovery led a team to return on November 9 to conduct a more “extensive search.”

At the time, crews discovered “evidence of 10 to 20 human skulls.” The remains were transported to the medical examiner’s office in Albuquerque for further analysis and possible identification.

Villanueva reportedly told investigators that he purchased the remains online and that no charges have yet been filed.

According to the Lea County Sheriff’s Office, the case is now connected to the 2019 disappearance of Angela McManes, who lived near the property on South 4th Street at the time she went missing.

McManes’ sister, Kris Kelton, spoke to KOB 4 in an article last updated on Wednesday, November 13, about the new details surrounding her sister’s disappearance.

However, Kelton said the family doesn’t have much new information and currently knows as much as the public.

“No, simply because it is still being processed. Yeah, I think it’s possible if you think about it? But you know, we don’t want to come to a conclusion until we know the final outcome,” Kelton told the news station. “Pretty much all we know is what has been released through social media.”

She added that McManes had not been seen or heard from in five years and left without her glasses, diabetes medication and money.

Kelton said her sister was a mother of three and would never have voluntarily left her children behind.

“When it came to her children, she would defend them right or wrong and then deal with them right or wrong. She was a wonderful mother. She loved her children more than I can even tell you. I know everyone loves their kids, but that was one of our clues that something was wrong, because she wouldn’t have left her kids,” Kelton told the outlet.
