Atlanta United completed perhaps the most stunning defeat in the history of the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, eliminating Supporters’ Shield winners Inter Miami CF with Saturday’s 3-2 victory at Chase Stadium.

Atlanta drove home a first-half brace from striker Jamal Thiaré and a 76th-minute winner from midfielder Bartosz Slisz to close Game 3 of their Round One Best-of-3 Series. In turn, they have booked an Eastern Conference semi-final at Orlando City SC after the November international break.

Inter Miami opened the scoring through midfielder Matías Rojas and equalized through Lionel Messi’s header in the 65th minute. But they could not force a penalty shootout and were repeatedly hampered by goalkeeper Brad Guzan, who made eight saves.

Atlanta is No. 9 in the Eastern Conference and finished 34 points behind Inter Miami, whose regular-season score of 74 points set an MLS record. Messi & Co. wanted to become the eighth team ever to win the Supporters’ Shield-MLS Cup double.
